I'd start with cleaning out the gunk and go from there.

Yeah common problem on E30s...

My wipers are a bit dodgy too, but still haven't got around to cleaning the motor.

I hope cleaning will do the trick, otherwise a used wiper motor would be the only option, because a new Bosch one is like 200 quid :D

The symptoms you describe sound like a motor fault, but I would expect some changes in its behaviour if you have taken it apart and put it back together, even if you haven't cured it. The control of the wiper motor is taken care of by the long black 'relay' in the fusebox, and it's possible this is at fault instead. Occasionally these act up when a loose spare fuse works its way partly underneath the module, shorting together a couple of the pins.
Worth having a look, and borrow a module if you can, to see if a fresh one cures the problem.

yes i looked at this but what happens is when the blades become stuck at the top off there cycle and begins to go back to the bottom of the screen that's when it jams and u can hear the motor grinding as if the cogs where slipping this is why i suspect the motor is at fault.
