I reckon that pipe is a breather of some kind, it might sit where the battery would go.

Errrrm, from memory, does it have a circle on the underside? If so, does that fit into the well somewhere? Im sure I remember a 1inch hole or something that this just sits into. The hose, I cant remember but im guessing there isnt going to be many places to put it.
Not sure its purpose, maybe something for condensation?

Don't fib Jim, you never had one, it had fallen out of a gaping rust hole years ago, as most have !

LOL !!
so does it connect to the overflow pipe thing that is in to the top of the battery ? it just "sits" there and nothing to actualy hold it in place as such to stop from moving about ? or does the recess and the battery tray just hold it ? yes jim there is a bit on the bottom circle shaped , il get the battery out tomorrow and have a look
all i need to do now is locate the foooking fuel flap solenoid, which is proving elusive

It sits right at the bottom of the foot well dude, under the actual tray. There should be a hole at the base, hopefully you havent welded it up else you'll have to start again and have your car repainted
If you struggle to find your solenoid, I have lots!

It pushes into the hole in the boot well floor and the other end of the hose connects to an elbow that is fitted in the end of the battery. Many modern batteries do not have vent holes so it is often redundant. The battery tray stops it from going anywhere.

The solenoid - it's the actual lead with plug on the end I can't locate !!! It might be up inside behind the wheel housing or Mia
