Hello fellow V8ers,

I am now the lucky owner of a fudged M62B44. Before I go out looking for a replacement M62B44, can anyone help me out with some answers to these questions?!;

I don't want vanos or fly by wire throttle, hence why I chose an early E39 for a donor. Can I use an M62B46 block with my M62B44 heads?

If I found a decent M60B40, could I use the M62B44 inlet manifold and heads? Any benefits to be had there?

I have it in my mind that Alpina did some sort of mixing to make the E36 B8.............

Sorry if these are stupid questions! :roll:

Here's a few photos explaining why my engine is fudged;

The jury is still out, but the donor car did break its top hose mounting on the test drive and may well have properly overheated previously, more than once??!! It drove perfectly on the 50 mile trip back home and didn't smoke or run rough on the rolling road. There was an over rev situation where the cruise cable held the throttle open and the next power run resulted in the above damage. It wasn't making the power anyway - only 300 or so at 5k rpm, with a 7psi charger, which was providing 7psi.......

If i remember right you can use a m62b44 bottom end with m60b40 heads and double timing chain to build a strong 4.4. The m60b40 cams are apparantly a bit lumpier than the b44 ones so should give a few more ponies

Thanks very much Tomislav :) It's a shame my M62B44 heads are good and that the bottom end is fudged! I'd have to potentially get two motors to make a good one up. I like the idea of lumpier cams though......

I am now thinking of getting my cylinders sleeved and perhaps making them oversized at the same time, to make an M62B46.

M60:
+best flowing intake manifold
+sharpest cams
+twin-row timing chain
+simple DME
-heavy valve train

M62:
+VANOS (to limit torque on lower revs)
+higher displacement
+much lighter valve train than in M60
-EWS

Combining the two gives the best outcome, and with some headwork & mapping can get the engine up to S62 power & torque :)

Hi Jonsku, since I last posted on the forum the engine has been taken to a machine shop and will be coming back as the same capacity, just with sleeves and CP pistons for 9.8:1 ratio. I considered all the options but the one option I did not have was money! I will be very happy to have astrong engine and whatever power and torque I get will be an improvement over my tired original engine..............
