At least you have a deadline, seriously though once he or she arrives kiss goodbye to anytime for fixing cars. In the 10 weeks since Lewis was born i think i have squeezed in about 5 hours max to get the car mot ready.

Beautiful car and great work on rebuilding her the way she deserves.
Hope it's up and running again soon. I miss my old E34 M5....but not the repair bills
The B10 BT was the dream though and I should have brought one a few years back when decent cars were around for £7/8k or so....
Ended up with an E39 B10 v8 though....so not all bad....
Enjoy!

Indeed enjoy I shall this summer!
Yesterday great strides where made

Doesn't look much but I've got the heat shields back on. This took an age because I didn't take any pics and counldn't remember for the life of me how they went back on! Also the same applied to all the turbo pipework to the intercooler!
I've also added the pipework for the coolant lines. This runs to the electric pump which runs after the engine is switched off the cool the turbos and improve their life

Geabox and starter motor re fitted. So this chunky lot is ready to go back into its home now. Which will be Monday!

But before it can go back in the last job is to sort this out. The heatsheild, its died in a word as you can see.

With it removed, ala e30 M3 the chassis leg is/was getting a bit scorched

The shielding around the brake line was in good condition so like the coolant lines I've wrapped it in some ali tape. Fairly important this to stop the brakes fading on this side i'd guess!

All cleaned up a treat. If this was an E30 we would of found a big rust hole!!

etch primed

few coats of black, job jobbed

Old and new, the new is doubled up so I've brought it home and I've going to glue them together and then seal the ends with ali tape again. Then its ready to re install to the car.
Should look good.

Last job on the rear end was a new fuel filter, can't hurt and when do they get changed?

This heat shield is a bit fubared, as its ali and the nuts that hold it on are steel. So its corroded away around where its held up. It was hanging off and rattling with the engine running. I bulked at the £150 for a new one and realised they're all like this now. So some inventiveness called with some big washers to the rescue! bit motorsport but they're plated and should help!
that's where its ended amazing where 6-7 hours can go! ready for the big refit on Monday!

Nice work, Si, though it's baulked and not "bulked" at the cost of something!
I wonder if anyone's ever fitted the B10 BT lump to an E30 - it would go like a rocket...

for some reason theres a spell checker on my computer and it changes everything is my excuse. Every time I type alpina it changes it to alpine which is very boring.
theres an e30 m3 with a bi turbo lump, its been posted on here before not sure where. Its got the e34 dash fitted too iirc and the recaro seats

Well Monday came and went, bit sweaty it was too
Carrying on with the chassis leg heat shield

It fitted perfectly, so fixing from the top and working down.

All fixed on, i'm pretty pleased it turned out so well. 100 times better than the knackered old shit that was there before

All ready for the engine to come back in. Few more shields fitted

Here we go, the mill and box doesn't need such a great angle to fit in. The engine bay is big on these buses

nearly there...............

finally back in on the mounts.....talking of which I couldn't remember which way they went! So 3rd time round we got the donk sitting where it should be. Huge step forward

refitted all the drive belts, everything that's easy to do with the front end in bits

new condenser and dryer in

viscous and radiator, plus the oil cooler which you can't see here

turbo boost pipes coming back on.
So flying now really, prop, exhaust to go and it won't be far off ready for the big re start

some more today,

on the back shot! ready for the propshaft

new gasket plus some grease

prop on so its ready for the leviathan exhaust system but not quite........

I had to finish fitting all the boost pipework back in. Doesn't look much but its all a bit tight in there, spanners to tighten the jubilees up. I'd refit a bit more of this before refitting the engine but hey ho
So not far of getting it ready to run and drive, the light is here nearly!

long day up the unit! but working on the daily aswell. Anyhow

I've connected the coolant line here to the electric pump for the turbos. So its now ready for the exhaust to go back on. Rocker is getting repainted to be perfectomondo. not the best pic as you can't see the coolant lines i'm on about

Front section loosely on ready for back box.

And there it is on, fully grown adult men weigh less than this exhaust. Doesn't look any different to when I started on it!

So this is the finshed article underneath, ready for action hopefully

heat shields back on, these are a right f**king pain.

airbox on, new air filter - its an e28 535i filter for your pub trivia

crap picture but looms all back in place and lots of it connected up, starter motor, engine earth, lambda, boost guage etc. I was fitting the oil filter at the time
So what you see here is all that's left. Throttle body, fuel lines, intercooler, oil and coolant
I'm going to be up there tomorrow and get this thing done and the show on the road hopefully with no dramas. I said that touching wood! I'm excited but nervous as always when it comes to the big re start after a lot of work on her. So heres to some big 265 width 1 1's outside the unit 2moro to get that old oil burnt out the exhaust!

Mondays been and gone but alas I was at the unit making progress

TB and pipework on, other bits I can't remember but it looks ready to go! Note, always try and remember how the wiring fits underneath the inlet with coolant pipes! Or get elastic fingers with mirrors on them

Intercooler back on, its had a good wash out

new bleed nipple, always rounded and knackered. Same as m20's and found it in my new spares draw. A deserving case I feel

time to add some oil, 10-60 Castrol TWS or edge sport? Its from the dealer and is the M-power grade stuff not the normal that Castrol make. Coolant in, we can imagine that going in too

ready to start..........with some nerves as always

BOOM! She runs, lives, breathes! We didn't push it out either, wouldn't go first time as fuel lines wrong way round, classic one. They don't idle well without the MAF plugged in either. Bar this its idleing a little rough but getting better everytime its started.......
No leaks detected, no blow on exhaust or turbos, coolant bled up without needing to open nipple! Loads and loads of oily smoke out the exhaust which was a little off putting, but i'd not put any cleaning type stuff through it, thinking burning it off would be the best way. I expect it will take a while. It was just starting to get smokey when I took this pic!
Onto today,

Henrys done a great job of letting in some small plates on both sides in this classic e34 rust area. Wings aren't too bad at bottoms after a clean up either

Start of the bit refit, head lamps and grills going on

wiper grills, these little black clips all broke on removal bar one, new ones all round as minimum order of 20 from BMW when you need 8........

tidyied all my shizzle up, as I'd made good time and was on a roll!

Ready for the maiden voyage!
Seems to be running better everytime its started I guess its the ecu's re learning after the batterys been disconnected. The cars at home now safe and sound, she sounds great with no blows on the exhaust now with some heat in the system. Its making correct boost high and low and was a nice drive home. What a car had a little plant of the right foot. I think the worst of the oil has burnt out the system now, still smells but nothing like it was on Monday! You can really hear the turbos now and the wastgates working away, a nice sound
Few snags and some little bits I need to buy but its ready for MOT now and its great to have her home at last.
Happy ending so far, I must make a big thankyou to Henry for use of the unit and putting up with this major repair(s) on the car and all the space/time its took up at one point

Boom diggedy! It'll be rather strange not having it on the ramp!
Si has done a serious job on this, attention to detail has been great, can't wait to get it on the dyno and see what power it is making
