The diff doesn't have the plate with the ratio on! How do I make sure/test?

When this site first appeared on the zone, I typed in a VIN from the V5C of a random E30 touring of mine, and this came up in the list. Crawled underneath the car in question the next day, and sure enough the diff. tag started with the magic 'S'. It's an otherwise almost standard 325 auto, and I'd no idea it had a slipper.Mo13 wrote:S209A SPERRDIFFERENTIAL 25% Differential lock 25%

Entfall Katalysator just means without catalyst.
the code might now be used for something else as all bmws will now have a catalyst, hence something getting mixed up in translation somewhere.

RPM sensitive steering is just power steering that turns off at a certain speed (well maybe rpm, always thought it was 30mph).

It used to do my head in on my e39, there was this one corner near mine that was perfect for hanging the arse out on. Entry speed was below the cut off but as soon as you jabbed the throttle to get it going it would cut in just as you were giving it a dab of oppo. Really off putting!
My e30 has it listed but I can't say I have ever noticed

it's not going to be speed related as it's a purely mechanical system with no electronic to anything so it can't possibly know the vehicles speedross_jsy wrote:RPM sensitive steering is just power steering that turns off at a certain speed (well maybe rpm, always thought it was 30mph).
I'll assume it's another slightly ambiguous translation, as all power steering usually only gives assistance if it's required, so it'll provide the most assistance when the car is stood still, once up and rolling at a decent speed the force needed to turn the steering wheel is a lot less so the power assistance is very low.
I guess they use the rpm dependent term to mean that it only works when the engine is running and that it's power assistance rather than pure hydraulic steering where there is no mechanical connection between the steering column and the rack.
If it was actually rpm dependant you'd feel the steering getting lighter and heavier as you revved the engine whilst manouvering, which would be very odd. I guess you might get that a bit with a worn pump or if running underdrive pulleys which would mean the pump struggled to pressurise the system at idle speeds.
cheers,
harry
