Would I have to buy spray cans from BMW, or do other places sell it and rough idea of cost per can?

Go to any auto paint suppliers and ask them to make up an aerosol in your shade. Take the car with you so that can offer up their paint chip samples to the car to get the best match.
Ask them to also supply a can of the correct colour primer as red is very suseptable to shade differences on different primers.

B7's advice is best, if your looking for the paint for a decent price and the match almost there www.paints4u.com do good aerosols matched to your paint code.

I would advise you go to a shop front rather than send someone codes via the net/phone and get it delivered.

Agreed, Don't ever expect a can of paint ordered off the net to match the panel on the car.
Nearly every colour has more than one shade. I was once told that Ford Diamond White had run for so long, there was 27 shades of it and thats taking into account fade over time (something red is the worst colour for doing). Not sure how true that is but it's possible.
This is why many repair centres now mix their own paint on site.

I've had SOME success in this. I did a Cinnabar red Micra that needed some bumper repairs and the match was superb.Rich320I wrote:halfords mixed up a large can of diamond swartz, great match IIRC it was £15 all in.
I went back for some BMW Arctic Silver for a Z3 bumper scuff and they just couldn't do it.
The Micra was lucky. Again, Halfords do not use paint chips. They just go on a database, look up the code and mix the generic colour. They cannot alter tone to match say a petrol flap supplied. They will just ask for the paint code and mix that code.
