Hi,

I need some help. I have just blown up the engine in my Toyota Hilux, which is the towing car for my BMW E30 320is Rally car. So rather than putting in a Totyota turd engine, I am considering dropping in an M50/52 engine and then running that on petrol/LPG.
I know I will probably regret this decision as it is going to be heaps of unnecessary work to get everything running, but it will be fun!!!

So first thing is to find out if the engine actually fits. Since someone on here will have an M50/52 outside a car, could someone take some measurements for me please. (And maybe some photos...)

Ideally I need the following measurements:
- height relative to crankshaft (i.e. how much engine is above crank, how much engine is below crank
- width
- length, from flywheel to front of engine, incl. water pump pulley (or what else is furthest forwards)
- distance flywheel to engine mounts.
- photo of rear of engine.
- photos of all 6 sides of the engine.

Many thanks and I will keep you posted what happens...
Cheers
Ingo

I have an engine sitting on a subframe on a table, will get these for you this afternoon.

Custom gearbox adaptor? The M52 sits at quite an angle in the E36 so you would have to keep this or modify a sump pan, the lower sump bowl is at the front on an E34 or the rear on an E36

Thanks DanThe!
Could you also measure how far it leans to the right hand side. I.e. distance from crank to point furthest on right if installed at nominal angle.

Yes I would be going for a custom gearbox adaptor. Luckily the Toyota gearbox comes with a removable bellhousing, so hopefully modifying the bellhousing and/or welding two together will be sufficient.

I have measure the engine bay and lengthwise, I have 80cm. to fit engine + radiator (electric fan can sit further forwards). I am expecting this will be a rather tight squeeze.

Cheers

Sorry I forgot about this, but this is what I measured last week, this is sat on an E30 subframe with an E34 sump, measurements are taken from the clutch side of the flywheel, which is about 30mm from the back of the block.
Height measurements are from the crank
