i was under the car today and noticed the rubber bushing that supports from the middle of the diff to the chassis is open ( worn away?) at the bottom between the 7 and 5 oԚ´clock marks

strnage thing is that it seems like a uniform opening in the rubber, but i have a feeling its not ment to be that way

how bad are we talkin here?

The standard bush does have quite a few cut out's,it's a shame i havn't got a picture to show you.

Do you get any knocking from the back ?

I havn't done the job my self but i think your supposed to remove the rear cover,press the old bush out and press the new one in.

The tricky thing about it is the pressing in and out because the rear cover is alloy, i should imagine it's fairly easy to crack it ?

I've got an Z3M dif bush to go in mine when i get around to it.

the bush is not a solid type bush and does have room for movement. I replaced mine with the stiffer one from the M Coupe :D

Andy 335 - As far as I can remember we used the press to push the old one out and new one in, just got to get the bush up the right way :)

Anyone got any pics?

no knockins as such, but i do get a judder first thing out in the car, after a few getle stop/starts it goes away

i reckon its the clutch as i dont seem to be able to peel out in the dry, and i tried a (richytouring) standing burnout , when you hold one foot on the brake and the other on the gas to make the wheels burn on the spot? well it didnt manage it and i got a smell in the cabin of something very warm somewhere :?

but looking at the bushing, it seemed like a very uniform spacing, so i dont know

Just fitted my reconditioned diff this week, heres a pic of the rear covers with bush in place. Large case on the left, small case on the right.

Didnt take much to press the new one in but the old one had fallen apart and was a bit of a pig to shift, took 9 tons on the press :eek:

nice one for that templ8e30 :D

looked at it again today, and the bushing is fine, no wear at all visable.

also , it seems i have a small case diff on mine, 320i touring

i cant read the diff tab though to see which one it is

Not sure about the tourings but most 320i manuals have a 4.10 diff.

My old one was whining like a child and locked up on me a few months ago so was time to change it, was full of tiny grains of steel !

As I'm building a 2.7 i rebuilt a large case 3.64.

I fitted new bearings and seals along with a new bush and dust shields. Cost me Ԛ£80 for all the bits.

The hardest bit was fitting the input shaft bearings, the inner one is a shrink fit so i had to grind the old one off. To fit the new one freeze the shaft in dry ice and heat the bearing to 80 degrees and it slips on :eek:

Well worth the hassle though, the car is totally silent for the first time since i bought it :D

dont fancy all that hassle with the shrinkin and all that, but it sounds like your havin fun so... :roll:

Sorry Andy i missed this part of you message after you edited your post ?

Did you notice much differance after you fitted the M bush ?

You can't see the bush to well on this picture but it looks like it's got the thicker bit of rubber on top,is that right ?

Thinking about it, the thick bit should be at the top: If I've got it right, looking from behind the car the crownwheel is to the left of the diff and so the prop turns CCW, so the diff will try to turn CCW and the resistant strength will be needed at the top of the bush.

Hi mate, to be honest not a massive difference, as you would expect, but its one of those things that when a few are done make a good car into a great car, if you know what I mean.

Not sure which way up as it was a while ago, will look when I have it up on the ramp next.

But when you do it just note the way your old one is mounted, unless someone has got it wrong before of course....
