Right

This is one annoying problem that I cant get to the bottom of- its happened on both cars so unless I'm really unlucky, someone else must have experience of it...

The wipers/screenwash come on on their own. On the bronzit it does happen when driving over a bump, suggesting its an earth type or short type fault.

The malachite one is stranger as it will activate when standing still, ignition on, engine off.

I've swapped relays, tightened earths in steering column but to no avail.

What should I do next? At the mo the only fix is remove the relay and pray for no rain.

Quite often caused by something metallic, such as a loose fuse, working its way under the large rectangular wiper control module in the fusebox.

would it be the relay at fault?

Unlikely - the module can't control the washers.

So is it the switch or the wiring connectors?

Or should I try the earth at the accs board?

Or closer to the wiper motor? Where is the likeliest place for a wire to earth or create a signal?

Most likely place for the washer control wire to 'earth' is where it gets the most movement - in the wash/wipe switch itself.
Cutting the washer wire at the plug and socket half way down the steering column will prove the point if the problem then goes away, although you won't have working washers in the meantime, of course.
