After having the garage replace a torn boot last year on the passenger side drive shaft at the wheel side I now have the same problem on the drivers side drive shaft.

The retaining nut on the hub has been chewed up by someone in the past.

I was thinking I could disconnect the shaft from the diff and replace the boot by pulling it over from the diff end of the shaft.

Does this sound possible?

Theoretically maybe, but those shafts are a coooooooont to get out, even once the nuts off they are bastid tight in the hubs

I was thinking leave it connected at the hub end and pull the boot over from the diff end as its easier to get apart. With the tools I have to hand there is no way that hub nut is comming off.

I take it the joints come off the shaft?

If so, why not unbolt it at the diff, cut the old boot off, then remove the shaft from the outer joint. Then stick the new boot on the shaft, put the shaft back in the joint and then do the boot up.

If you drop the trailing arm down, there should be plenty of room to get the shaft in and out straight.

Good question, I have no idea. Never tackled this before.

sticky boots?

you used to be able to buy boots which had a slit down them so you could place them over the joint before using the supplied glue to stick it together.

not sure whether they still exist, or if they do, if theyre any good!

i've also seen kits supplied with a cone to be able to slip them over the joint from the wrong side to avoid splitting the shaft, but no idea whether you'd be able to get the boot over the inner joint which is pretty chunky.

always thought it was odd that you can't get the joints on either end separately. wouldnt surprise me if the inner joint could be split off the shaft somehow, but i wouldnt fancy trying it myself on a car i needed to rely on.
cheers,

harry

Having spoken to Boyd, he's happy to replace the shaft with the spare I have for very little cash. Saves me the ballache of trying myself. For once I'm going to be defeated as if I make an arse of it the car won't be drivable to get it to him.
