I thought I would finally get round to starting a build thread seeing as the cab is unlikely now to ever be sold.

So in 2010 my early mid life crisis kicked in. We bought a new pad and it had a garage so it was time to scatch my itch for a e30. I always loved the looks of a cabby but never had the time before to feck about with old scrap.

Seeing as scottish weather likes to turn most E30's into the brown rotting stuff E30's available were in short supply and this was the first one I saw that had no immediately visible rust, I was nieve and most imporatantly the car was realativly cheap.

The picture makes it look better than it was.

It came with:
> Knackered out suspension on a -60mm drop
> Bad boy and ear numbing DTM powerflow exhaust
> Missing spare wheel
> 14" BBS on varied ditch finders and tyre sizes.

> Stereo completly absent and a fire hazzard of wiring
> Matt black painted hoseshoe
> Dull and generally poor paint
> Broken Locks and Central locking
> Flaky instruments in the dash cluster
> Was filthy and the glove box had plenty remnants of a previous owner that enjoyed the herbal.
> Knackered roof with bodged rear screen and a cracked frame
> Just swapped 2.5 Lump as the last owner seized the original engine.

On the plus side there was loads of history with old MOT's tax discs, reciepts, service history etc etc.

On the way home from bying the car it broke down 60 miles from home with a snapped fan belt and made its final leg of the journey on the AA mans flatbed.

Once home I really wanted to use it, so replaced the fan belt and got started on cleaning her up.

Before giving her a machine polish:

Spent the best part of two weeks on and off cleaning and polishing and the results were not too shabby:

picked up an ebay bargain set of wheels for £78:

Had them professionally refurbished:

Shod with 4 new Avons and fitted to the car, also replaced the shocks with boge turbos, -35m springs, new BMW spring pads, Dust covers and bump stops.

Picked up a good second hand roof from Z3I and got rid of the DTM exhaust for a new mild steel one:

Over this whole time I cracked on with the oily bits and have changed all the fluids, radiator, sensors, filters, belts and water pump.

The engine bay still looked pretty dirty but the car ran much better (at least for a while)

The cab has now been off the road since last september and is currently in many pieces strewn accross my garage. My son was born in february which has ground progress to a halt but currently the inlet side of the engine has been stripped and all new gaskets, orings, seals, vacumn pipes nuts, washers, rubber fuel lines etc were ordered up from BMW and are ready for the re-assembly.

The injectors have been sent off to injectortune for a refurb and the inlet manifold \ rocker are currrently being painted so I can get it all put back together.

MOT is due in May and I need to tackle the prop donut and centre bearing before then along with the above and the old girl should be fit to drive for another summer.

She is far from finished and long term will need the body work sorted out as although there is no rot every panel needs paint and dings removed. Its a bit of a 5 footer of a car but its more of a hobby for me and if it takes me 10 years to finish it then so be it.

More to follow

Great transformation! Bastardised cabs are not pretty IMO

Have you got a prop center bearing? I have a new one here I am not going to need/use you can have for a zone donation...
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

The easter holiday weekend meant I had some time to get tinkering again.

Fitted the new drop links and bushes on the front ARB and got on with some of the engine work on the friday.

The engine has been in pretty much this state for the last 8 weeks:

It was a relativly warm day so finally got round to painting the inlet, rocker cover, timing covers, cross pipe and engine bracket thing.

At that point these two needed my attention more than the cab

On the sunday, put the rocker cover on to see how the engine will start to look

I know its a pain in the backside but, once the rocker and inlet are nicely fixed on, I find that the exhaust manifold gaskets properly set of the engine bay if you know what I mean. Nice clean addition to the engine bay.

But really annoying to get done

Looking good tho!

I was thinking about that. The engine was swapped about 1500 miles ago so there's a good chance the exhaust manifold would be easy removed to do the gaskets.

Just a little reluctant to take it off as currently it doesn't leak but it might once taken off and the gaskets replaced as the do have a tendancy to going banana shaped.

I think ill tackle it after the MOT is out the way.

What are your wheels. They are very smart, bargain price! I love a good chromie. Good work! What's with the black seat bolsters?

nice work mate, i like the wheels and you've done a really smart job of that rocker cover and inlet manifold, they look great.

It's not easy with kids, i've got a 2 and 3 year old, getting time with the e30 is a challenge. I tend to do tag team with the wife, i.e i'll take them out for the morning and she entertains them whilst i work on the turd in the afternoon.

Keep up the good work, it will be one smart car when finished :D

The wheels are 15" fondemetal basket weaves, not so much of a bargain after the refurb, 4 new tyres and caps. But still cheaper than buying 15" BBS and doing the same.

The seats have had the bolsters done at some point. I am thinking of dying it all a different color as its all a bit gruby and no matter how much gliptone i use to clean it up its not getting much better than it was.

Thanks for the comments Jim. At the rate i'm progressing it will be finished by the time Lewis is 17 and can drive it himself

Progress is soo slow on this at the moment, how anyone on here with kids manages a resto quickly I will never know.

The prop centre bearing started making noises just after I took it off the road last year so it was time to tackle that and the rubber guibo while i waited on other parts for the engine turning up.

The guibo is well past its best:

How it looks compared to a new one:

And the bearing carrier had a massive split in it as well :(

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

So with a new carrier being ordered today, and a big back of new bits from BMW arriving and cleaned injectors from Injectortune it will be a task of starting to get the engine back together and hopefully running tonight.

Lovely looking cab now.

I owned a more door 325 SE, dolphin grey when they were new, which got sold, due to lack of use, when I got a company car. However, I didn't really keep track of the model, but always wanted another, which was why I bought my cab. I was also naive to the rot, but thankfully mine is very clean. Phew!!

I'm sure someone could find some lurking, though.

Great work, keep the posts coming.

Apparantly lots of packages turned up today, wife has been told they all cost £10

Hopefully tomorrow should be a productive day and it might even get off the stands and started. All dependant on me knowing where all the bits, nuts and bolts I took off find a home to go back to.

RT, re the wife and parts... to avoid arguments i have arranged to have all parts delivered to a mates house round the corner. This method stops the wife bending my ear when parcels arrive (no matyter what price i tell her i paid).

What she cant see she cant yell at you for!.. :D

A little bit of an update this time as the car creeps ever slowly forward to being ready for an MOT and hopefully the scottish meet on the 18th of May.

Lots of bits arrived from BMW and GSF that needed fitted, including gearbox mounts, new exhaust hangers, prop carrier and bearing, nuts bolts etc etc.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I also spent a good while testing the TPS on the TB as I was not conviced that it was working correctly. Being a switchable auto box its 6 pins rather than the usual 3 which was a bit more complicated to work out what pins did what. But the good news is Mr moore conviced me that my test results mean its working.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

So anyway after an hour or so of lying on my back cramped under the turd the prop was all re-assembled. With the new gearbox mounts, guibo, prop carrier and bearing.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I had also ruined the underseal on the two rails on the floor pan from the trolly jack and forgetting to put something a little more forgiving between the pad and the floor of the car. So it was scrapped off and refinished in stonechip type underseal I got from a local paint shop.

Image

Clearly I'm, not the best sprayer in the world but it will do its job and protect the underside. Some Waxoil over the top should keep it good for a few more years.

Last but not least the engine is pretty much back together after relacing the inlet gaskets, seals, plugs, dizzy, rotor, waterpump and timing belt. It still needs the engine, power steering, coolant and gearbox fluids done, the exhaust attached back up and a bloody good steam clean. But I am getting closer to being able to take it out for a test drive.
