Socket is for an on board computer that replaces the clock.
Open up the instrument cluster, by undoing all the screws at the back, except the ones that hold the rev. counter and speedo., pull the two halves apart, put down the back half, dials upwards, pull out the 'coding plug' from the lower front right corner of the front half, remove the single screw in the middle inside, remove the plastic bracket it holds, then extract the SI circuit board.
There are two batteries on this board that probably need replacing. Full details are in the wiki.
While the cluster is apart, check the soldering on two connections near the temp.gauge, and tighten the two small nuts on the back of the cluster that hold the fuel and temp. gauges in place.
