Just been doing some research for the wiki and stumbled across the following comment - "I think you are supposed to replace the PS res. every 90k-100k miles. Once the filter wears out the dirty fluid can eventually excellerate the wear & tear your PS pump.

Clean PS Fluid = Happy PS Pump
"

Is this true?

if its looks brown and burnt it wont be performing properly so change it - in a good system should still be red so you're going to notice a change.

I'm not talking about the fluid, I'm talking about the actual reservoir!!

I've heard of this. There's apparently a mesh filter over the outlet in the bottom of the reservoir, but I've never come across a reservoir with any detectable blockage there yet.
I do back flush them a bit when cleaning one out, but I've never forked out for a new one yet.

If this is similar to the mesh filter fitted to the oil pump, then surely removal of the PAS fluid holder and cleaning is all that is needed?
Cannot see any sound reason to replace an item at such a low milage!

Interesting, will try and get hold of one to inspect then. Always wondered why there seems to be an extra layer in the bottom of it.

I'm assuming if you wanted to clean it out a degreaser would be the best bet?

Found this on pelicanparts.com recently.
{LUK will only honour power steering pump warranties provided the power steering fluid reservoir was replaced in conjunction with the pump, These reservoirs are designed with unserviceable filters that may cause premature pump failure due to reduced flow}. Hope this helps
