Sure they can be tuned, but in standard fettle they are far from quick compared to more modern BMW lumps

Engine spec:
3.5 V8
Ported heads with kent double springs skimmed.
Hurricane cam
Std Followers
Adjustable push rods (Real steel bottom end bolts)
Timing button to stop float
Steal timing gears
Offy manifold with 600CFM double pump carb
Electronic ignition.

So had some work done. Cheap lump to throw in compared to a lot of modern BMW stuff

I bet he's getting about the same power as an M30.
E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap :)
