I've just had the mechanic on the phone talking to me about the front suspension on my car, whilst some other work was being done I asked him to fit the SuperSport front shocks I had in the boot.

He says that they don't fit, it was something related to the collar nut not fitting on with the new insert in place?

Anyone had this issue or know what I can do about it? I've had the inserts for a couple of years now so there's not a hope I can return them. But in a search on here I found reference to possibly needing replacement collar nuts - but on the net I can't find anything?

Car is a prefacelift 325i & the inserts fit inside the struts okay.

Thanks

Are the inserts too small? ie 45mm inserts and you having a 325, it will have 51mm struts?

New collar nuts, to fit the new dampers, are normally included in the box with the dampers, if they require a different design from OE.
OE dampers have a reduced diameter section at the top for the collar nut to fit over, but some other makes are parallel sided.
Others have a damper rod that has a larger diameter than OE.

I'll ask re the parts in the box. They are the correct diameter, but it sounds like they are parallel sided from Brian's comment above.

If they're not in the box I'm lost as to what next...

They're only bloody Cab fronts as well!

So no collar nut, wrong flaming bits.

I give up!

?????????? Cab. front suspension is identical to that on a 325 saloon, bar possibly spring rates and ARB diameter.

That statetemt was based on fact that the model code on the parts are different cab to saloon. looked it up on the website and the codes for the cab inserts and the saloon inserts for this damper are different, my assumption therefore was that although the fitment is the same, the damper will be designed for a different load/weight?

Would there not be any handling peculiarities as a result?

Strange that they list cab dampers with a different part number as blistein and boge are the same for all 325s regardless of model variant.

Springs are engine specific at the fron but model specific at the rear.

That's actually quite good news then for me - thanks all (again).

Still missing the collars though... however fingers crossed I can get something sorted.
