Im interested in a car which the owner claims to have an 2.7 but Im not sure.
I know they look identical to a 2.5 but does anyone know any way of telling?

Depends how the owner has done the conversion. There are a few ways. He could have used a 320i or a 325i block and changed the crank and done all the internal work. Then it might be hard to tell unless he has proof to back it up.

Or he could have dropped in the block from a 325e or 525e as these had a longer crank. To which he added a 320i or 325i head. The engine number should provide info on what the block is. This is found under the inlet manifold on the block. Provide the number you find in here and im sure someone will know what it is.

I did a 2.7 conversion on my old car and used a 325e bottom end with a 325i head... Good conversion and still looks standard.

Hope this helps mate :)

Only way to tell for sure is to measure the stroke, and the only practical way to do this is with a piece of wire through a spark plug hole, looking for a 81mm stroke rather than 75mm or 71.
