If you're getting clunks from the rear it's most likely the subframe bushes - most are shagged on these cars by now.

Could be the shock absorber top mounts.

By the way, axle tramp normally refers to solid rear axles mounted on cart springs that move sideways and twist unless very well tied down. Like on Ford Crapis (without the well tied down bit).

The e30 rear suspension is much more sophisticated than that.

Could also be worn out shock absorbers (dampers); try bouncing each corner of the back of the car up and down - it should settle on the first bounce rebound.

They have universal (CV) joints that can wear out.

Never knew that.

Having watched some of the E30's (and other BMW's) at Santa Pod last year there was plenty of Axle tramping and fooked rear subframe bushes! So whether it is the correct terminology or not it can definately happen on quite a visually staggering scale 8O
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Andyboy's Restoration Bible has this to say on the subject:

Also, check that the rear anti-roll bar linkages are intact.

Not true though, it can happen on any car in the right conditions at a certain resonant frequency.

Most common in old cars with leaf springs as the axel would try and wind itself around the springs, the tyre would slip, releasing tension in the spring, make the wheel hop and the process repeat on landing.

Certainly knackered bushes, mounts and dampers can make it worse, but its not unknown even on brand new cars.

And e30 rear suspension is far from sophisticated!
cheers,

harry

On an E30 I feel that it is more to do with the angle of the trailing arm and torque on launching, but yes shagged dampers/bushes/springs will only make it worse

I am an axle tramp victim :(
