As above, I made the silly mistake of buying a blue point reset tool before reading the Wiki

a small piece of wire in a folded bit of paper with the below drawn/printed on , marking the holes, is all you need kept in the tool kit

If you're absolutely sure you did it correctly, and it didn't work, then your SI Batteries are knackered. A garage will be unable to turn off the lights if they don't swap those batteries.

Based in Portsmouth Chris.
Def did it right, placed a elctrical wire in the correct hole and tried with earthing it to the car and also in hole 19. When i turn on the ignition all the lights go on and the inspection light goes off but as soon as i start theh engine it reverts back to the inspection light been on. I take it you do turn the ignition on so you get the lights on the dashboard rather than just the first turn of the key.

Expensive if you pay someone else to do it, yes, because they'll inevitably break something else.Llewekab wrote:Im guessing SI batteries are exspensive and hard to replace!!!
Have a read of this, and then click on the guide to replacing the batteries:

where in pompey are you mate im in the area ?
you just bridge the 2 said holes with a bit of speaker wire, cut say a 4 or 5 inch bit, strip 1.5 inch from each end, and fold the bare bits a few times, so you get 2 nice thick ends that contact properly , connet the 2 holes and turn the ignition (not starting the car)

what year is the car ?Llewekab wrote:Im guessing SI batteries are exspensive and hard to replace!!!
ive never replaced them, but may be easier is to just buy a new set of clocks (£15-20) with known good ones in, then swap your dials and bits around from yours

also, are you certain its the inspection or oil light on ? and not something like the red brake sensor light ?

If the SI board batteries have failed, they will soon start to leak corrosive liquid over the copper tracks of the SI circuit board, rendering it unrepairable. This circuit board carries all the electronics for the other gauges, etc., except the speedo, so soon you'll have more problems than a red light!Llewekab wrote:Tried again and failed. Get the cluster out and opened up. Batteries are easy to replace if you know how to work a soldering iron.

brian out of interest- if my clocks have been out the car and un-used for over a year stored in a garage, would the batteries still be ok ?

Should be OK if the batteries are good. If the batteries are the NiCd type they should soon top up their charge when reconnected, but the Lithium type is not rechargeable and is being 'used up' for every minute it's disconnected from the main car battery. Their total life is a few years, but there's a wire link on the board that should be snipped if storing these boards for any length of time. BMW replacement boards have a couple of pins with a plug that connects them together instead of the wire link, so on these you just pull the plug.
