15" every time! 17" rims are far too heavy for E30 suspension and totally mess up the handling.
Have a look at an article in the March "Car Mechanics" if you can, and look at the Mazda MX-5 project. The handling of the car was way below what it should have been, and was largely sorted by swapping the 17" aftermarket wheels for the OE 14" wheels, saving a massive 44kg of unsprung weight.

Agree there, E30's shouldn't be run with more than a 16" wheel, the BK reps on mine were awful, and it tramlined like buggery

Yea mines doing that a bit atm. I got bk alpina reps on mine. Im getting all new suspension upgrade at the weekend so hopefully that will help. New top mounts, struts, h and r springs, bilstein b4 shocks. Then next week im going to get the tracking, wheel alignment and balancing done. Then if it hasnt made any difference with the wheels i think ill be putting my standard bbs back on.Chris_B86 wrote:It would pull and follow grooves in the roadRich2388 wrote:What do you mean when you say "tramlined" chris? It will still tramline with the BK's on, they're reknowned for it. They look ok but ruin the feel and drive of the carRich2388 wrote:Yea mines doing that a bit atm. I got bk alpina reps on mine. Oh really? Thats the thing, i have heard loads of people on here say they will affect the handling but i just couldnt resist, i just think they look good and really set it off. I mean surely it will make some improvement.........wont it????Chris_B86 wrote:It will still tramline with the BK's on, they're reknowned for it. They are very well suited to the e30 looks wise, but they're just too heavy and cheaply made, coupled with the fact that 17's in general aren't fantastic on an e30, it's always going to affect the handling regardless of the suspension. If you'd have put them on a brand fire new on back in the day, they'd have made it worse

Get some 15's on it,
When i put my 16" splits on my car it become a tad bit sluggish and the steering felt heavier. But on the upside they look the muts nuts
Keep your azevs for the summer months and run 15's during the winter

The difference between a 15" and a 17" wheel is that you've replaced two inches of air with solid aluminium all the way round.Rich2388 wrote:I mean surely it will make some improvement.........wont it????
Take a normal 15" wheel and then zip-tie a brick to it, and you'll achieve the same effect. Why on earth do you think that would improve the handling?

I wasnt asking if putting 17s on it would improve it...what i was asking is that as I have 17s on mine atm and it has affected the handling, if i keep the 17s on but upgrade my suspension and get the tracking, wheel alignment and balancing done wont that improve the ride as apposed to just leaving 17s on as it is. Granted, i know that for the best results handling and drive wise the best thing to would be to put 15s back on, but im talking about with my current 17s i have on atm.Grrrmachine wrote:The difference between a 15" and a 17" wheel is that you've replaced two inches of air with solid aluminium all the way round.Rich2388 wrote:I mean surely it will make some improvement.........wont it????

Refreshing your suspension will help with things dynamic response, but you'll probably find the horrors of the 17" rims are actually made worse. At the moment the awful tramlining is somewhat reduced because of the wobbliness of your steering and suspension (tired bushes causing increased toe-out under acceleration, for example).
Of course, it may correct some other issues so the overall feeling is improved, but it's as daft as upgrading your engine instead of just taking off your handbrake.

I was planning on upgrading my suspension anyway, so if it doesnt make any inprovement or makes it worse i will just put my standard bbs back onGrrrmachine wrote:Refreshing your suspension will help with things dynamic response, but you'll probably find the horrors of the 17" rims are actually made worse.
