getting it to step out should be easy enough if you are aggressive with it, but you will really struggle to maintain it without an LSD, ive certainly never managed it personally

still bloody hard to maintain one with open diff wrongness though

once you have driven an open diff and then drive a slipper the difference is unbelieavable. the car feels more sure of what it doing, you can feel whats going to happen and it lays power down a lot better. it really is a must have device imo, certainly should be high up on anyones mod list

there's usually slippers going on eBay and the zone. ~250 is about the going rate. keep your eye on the for sale section. wanted ads don't usually get much response but do speak to pacerpete, I beleive he has a couple of 3.64 diffs.

two common options are 3.64 and 3.91.

3.64: better top speed, less acceleration (good motorway economy)
3.91: better accel, less top speed (not so good motorway economy)

I don't think the differences are anything that you'd cry over.

Dan, I have managed in the wet to get full revolutions of a roundabout :)

oh yeah, defo in the wet. thing is with an open diff is that things go wrong then one wheel start to slip more than the other, all of the the torque then moves over to the wheel with the least resistance, then the wheel without drive finds lots more grip and hey presto you've snapped back into line... on low friction surfaces like wet and gravel both wheels lose grip and thus have rougly equal resistance (keeping them both spinning) until eventually the the resistance changes low on the unloaded wheel and higer on the loaded (driving/drifting) wheel. and, as mentioned above, the wheel with least resistance will "steal" all the power thus ending the drift rather abruptly. Gay, but hey that's life :)

So to drift on an open diff you need to reduce the grip (to keep the resistance on the wheels the same for as long as possible) or just go faster - which is far to scary for me...

discalimer: that's how it happens in my head. I'd love to be put right but I think that's correct.

the lower ratio has better acceleration across the board.

So, on a good 2.5 putting out 190bhp you think the 3.91 is best?

I'm probably not qualified to give an opinion on what's best as I'm a lowly m40b18 boy.

Having said that I'm going to anyway :) I'd personally take a 3.91 as I'd be happy to trade off the the cruising economy for the extra torque for when I need to sustain my superdrifts :)

m8 its not important at all.
yes its what was fitted, but it doesnt matter what diff u fit.

the 3.64 will give better mpg whilst the 3.91 will give better acceleration.

when bmw facelifted the e30 they also lowered the compression ratio.
this blunted the performance a touch - so to make up for it bmw changed the diff ratios.
a 3,91 on an early car tho wud make a pretty quick e30
