hi, over the last few weeks ive been losing my clutch pedal. only when i hold the clutch down the pedal goes soft and the car starts to edge forward, it also gets hard to get out of gear when doing this. i fitted a new slave cylinder back in feb, could it just need a fluid change??
thanks.
thanks.

Sounds like it needs a master cylinder change as well.

Yes. A fluid change can help, but you cant fix worn out stuff with it.pipework wrote:leaking passed the seals do you think??

If you read the tech. posts on here regarding clutch hydraulics, you'll see that it's recommended to change both master and slave when one fails.
When your slave cylinder failed, the piston in your master cylinder would have travelled a little further than it has in the last twenty odd years, and this damages already fragile seals on the crud that has built up.

Same problem, possibly, car's been off the road for a while back on now. Leaving this morning, seemed remarkably eager to pull off when changing gear! Went to change to second, was very tricky. Got to a roundabout, went to go in to first, no way I could. IU then realised the clutch fely like it had lost all pressure. Managed to get back home (turned off the engine started in first!).
Only thing I've done is topped up the clutch fluid with brake fluid, perhaps it was getting low as a symptom. Is there i definate way to know if I need to change slave and master cylinders? Can't see much on the wiki how to change them, but searches are bringing up top tips.
Cheers!

Yeah, changing the clutch cylinders isn't covered in the Wiki - it's not something I can cover because my car's LHD so I don't have any experience of how it works for you guys.
Basically, if your fluid is dropping then you have a leak. If there's fluid in the footwell then it's the master, if it's under the car it's the slave. Doesn't matter either way, since you ought to change them as a pair.
Changing a slave is easy though; undo the hose just like you would on a brake caliper, crack off the two bolts that hold it to the gearbox, and pull it out. Simple as. It's the master that's a pain since you have to do it upside down in the footwell.

System is the same and works in the same wayGrrrmachine wrote:Yeah, changing the clutch cylinders isn't covered in the Wiki - it's not something I can cover because my car's LHD so I don't have any experience of how it works for you guys.
Only difference is that LHD share the fluid holder for both footbrake and clutch.RHD has a seperate clutch fluid holder mounted on the o/s suspension turret.

added a few more links to help out in my post earlier.
been looking through the car history tonight. the amount of business money earnt by sewell in bishop stortford on this car is astronomical! i think it had a pretty harsh life in its early days. though retirement hasbbeen kind with 5 yearly services and only about 3000 miles in that time!
anyway, i noticed the master cylinder was changed 35000 miles ago, and canteen no leaking from there tonight. i guess that's too long ago and still need to replace the master and slave?
