Hi all, i need your help please.......
I fitted the original alloys that came with my car back on today as the tread on them are better than the current alloys, However there is something up as a rubbing metal sound can be heard when driving?
I'm not sure if the tyres are directional? if they are Would this create the noise?

Need help please!! :o:

Are there brake disc backplates on E34s? If there is, its possible you could of knocked one whilst changing wheels and now one is rubbing slightly on a disc.

Whilst changing the wheel the jacking point must have been slightly corroded and the jack collapsed( should have invested in axle stands) resulting in the disc and backing plate hitting the floor! i'm such a rookie.

Anyone know how to fix a backing plate?

Thanks jmc330i for the advice

Gets your fingers between it and the disc and pull it away from the disc. It should only need a bit of tweaking to clear the disc.

You might also want to get the wheel off again and check nothing else has been damaged after dropping on the floor.

Hi All, I've narrowed it down to being the back right disc thats making the metal on metal noise. I took the wheel off and span the disc with my hand and made sure the back plate is not touching, but there is still a metal on metal noise coming from somewhere? Not sure where to go from here?
Any help would be great.... thank you

Sometimes the parts won't touch in the air due to the fact the bearings aren't loaded up. Just go round and have a look at the back plates and try pushing them back.

That or get someone to drive the car slowly and get near to each wheel and see which one it is.

Assuming the e34 rear setup is similar to an e30s part of the handbrake mechanism might have dislodged inside the disk.
cheers,

Were the wheels that you removed genuine BMW? If not, they may have been fitted to the car with matching, non standard wheel bolts.
If these bolts are longer than standard, there's a good chance that they've damaged one or both handbrake mechanisms.

Hi all, Quick update...... I have had the rear wheels off and have looked for the source of the metal on metal noise.

i've been told it could be the handbrake shoes that need replacing?

Booked into the garage tomorrow, hope it's not going to cost too much, they did say it would be ready in an hour!! :jesus:

The rear backplate on an e34 is made up of a couple of pieces of steel welded together. Rust can form between over time and force them apart causing a hard to find grinding noise,Especially when cornering
