A little help.

So, my car (1990 318i touring) doesn't have a Cat fitted, nor does it have a middle box, will I need either for the car to get through its MoT? And also, if I put a middle box on will it make the car quieter? And if that's the case, does it have to be E30 specific or can I scavenge one from a younger model? Many, Many thanks in advance. Jay

As long as it was not originally fitted with a cat you should be fine.
I once had an advisory for 'exhaust system excessively noisy' so you might be a bit dodgy with no middle box. An e30 one would probably be an easier and better fit.

It's unlikely your car ever had a cat, and since it was first registered in 1990, the question won't arise at MOT test time anyway.
Fitting the correct centre box will almost certainly make your car quieter and also develop a little more power.
