Kinda brainstorming here

Well I was thinking of a couple of things, what's your guys thoughts of adding a electric water pump to move the water quicker to keep temps down?
Also getting rid of the belt driven PS pump and having a electric one in its place?
Thoughts thoughts.
Reason being I'm seriously going though the motions of twin turboing the M60 and it runs hot already without the help of 2 rockets strapped to either side of the heads.

I know there isn't much room at the back of the m60 but I was thinking of plumbing it in with the rear water pipes? Gives the water a boost at the rear where the pressure drops?

I looked at going with an electric water pump, but for parasitic drag reasons.
Electric power steering pumps never feel right. Driven a couple mk2 escorts with Corsa (iirc) set ups and it feels too artificial

That's an electric column.ross_jsy wrote:Electric power steering pumps never feel right. Driven a couple mk2 escorts with Corsa (iirc) set ups and it feels too artificial
I'm assuming he's talking about an electric pump.
I have a Saxo one sitting on a shelf that I've considered putting on mine.

yea i would go for a electric water pump just to move more water round because the M60 is a big old lump to cool.
as for the PS, yes max i was going for a electric pump setup. the question is do i need to change the PS rack or will a e30 PS rack work?

no its mainly because the water stays in the back water ways too long which then gets super hot when at slow speeds

Just my 2p worth. When looking at cooling issues a few years ago for a custom build, I researched electric waterpumps. The only offering I could find was that of a company from Oz called Davis Craig. The overwhelming view of them is they are sh1t, the pumps are under powered, cause cavitation, and are unreliable.
As for reducing parasitic losses, you will need additional electrical power to drive the pump, so that means the alternator is working harder, so no gain there, more like a loss. The more power an alternator is producing the harder it is to turn.
Things may have changed in the last couple of years, but I doubt it

Not sure here, but didn't the Mk3 VR6 golfs have an electrical pump to move the water as well as a normal water pump?

Possibly, like the Vauxhall V6s, although I think that was more to circulate the coolant after the engine has been turned off - the pump and fan would run on until the coolant temps had dropped enough not to cook the rear head.Andy325i wrote:Not sure here, but didn't the Mk3 VR6 golfs have an electrical pump to move the water as well as a normal water pump?
Could still be an idea for an M60 conversion as I expect the engine bay temps rise a fair amount once everything's switched off and there's no air flow round the bay.

Isn't there external / additional circulation pump in e.g. E39's with "restlÃaftung / standheizung"?
As said, they are meant mainly for getting enough heat in the air to be blown in, thus they would not be replacement for the original pump.

So could a pump like that be used at the rear of the M60 as well as the belt driven pump to move the water round abit more Jon?

To be honest - no idea. I guess there's only one way to find out
