Iv added onto a thread I started ages ago but haven't had a response yet.. Im in need of advice..
Stripped the M42 down to find the crank+cam sprockets very warn.. Idler pully still ok! but not trusted..
After doing a bit of digging came up with the plan of buying a M44 engine a using the timing casing on the m42 engine then replace all parts needed ( sprockets, chain, guides, oil pump, relief valve, and adding pilot bearing to crank journal ) Now i realise there is no holder for the CPS on the M44 case..
Was always sh*t at homework!
Help needed..
Do i pull the casing of the m44 and chope the m42 CPS holder of then have it welded on to the M44 case? or:
Sell the complete M44 engine and box and by a E36 M42 engine? or:
Use the M44 engine but swap over the E30 bits i.e IN/EX manifolds, sump etc? Will this work??
I now have 3 engines:
1. M42 with double snapped of Idler pully mount but with new looking chain, sprockets.
2. M42 with warn chain/sprockets seems ok idler sprocket + mount and if true on 60kmiles on clock + ran ok exept for rattle. &
3. M44 that looks ok with new lookin cam sprockets
Wanna make 1 good engine, anyone have any ideas?
Mucked up my homework, M42/44 help needed!

I don't think the M44 fits into an E30, the wiring is a nightmare I think, I would put the E36 lump into your car.

Yeah cheers, iv read that the m42 has better internals too.. Would rather keep the m42 if I can..
Iv got 2 e30 m42s and 1 e36 m44
Has anyone used the m44 timing case with the idler coge delete on a m42?
Is there anyway to use the m44 case apart from welding the CPS mount onto the front.

You can use the M44 with the M42 front timing case, manifolds etc plus rerouting a heater hose.
If retaining the M42, converting to the post 93 chain set up without the idler gear is a plan.

So whats stopping me getting someone to weld the CPS holder from the duff case onto the front of the M44 case then fitting the M44 case onto the m42 block?
Is there anymore differences between the M42 & the M44 T case? (I no about the higher capacity oil pump)

Why not use the E36 M44 loom and ECU? Surely its the better way to do it

Well that's cos I don't have the m44e36 loom and Ecu... Yet!
I did take a look at the cam sprockets whilst I was attempting the crank bolt removal to then pull the covers off thinking to myself "those points look very un-pointy".. Maybe I should just stick the m44 in?? Iv been reading that the m42 is stronger? Is this the case if so what makes it stronger?
Surley having a higher capacity oil pump, piston skirt oilers, no idler gear and generally being a newer motor, would these facts not make it stronger/better?
Besides loom, Ecu what else will I need to make fit into my 318is?
