Quick question fellas;
I'm heading down from North Wales to Leicester this morning to pick up a set of 16" alloys and I need space in the convertible to fit all 4 wheels in....
I was thinking of removing my spare wheel (currently a 15" BBS) to make room......what impact will this have on handling for my motorway trip?
Safe to drive?

???????????? Spare wheel can only affect the handling when you bolt it to one of the hubs.

I doubt removing 15kg from the back of a 1200kg car will make a huge difference to the handling
cheers,

Yeah that's what I'm getting at bud,harry_p wrote:I doubt removing 15kg from the back of a 1200kg car will make a huge difference to the handling
For instance, I read that some people have removed the lead weight in the base of the boot footwell and its made the car handling dreadfull......

The lead (iron) weight is tuned to deal with harmonic vibrations, not ballast. Adding 45kg of fuel is likely to make considerably more difference than adding or removing a wheel.alexdejonghe wrote:Yeah that's what I'm getting at bud,harry_p wrote:I doubt removing 15kg from the back of a 1200kg car will make a huge difference to the handling

it won't make any difference on a motorway journey but it is a noticeable and imo a negative for twisty road handling.

The difference in handling with 15kg less in the car will be far less than the return journey with and extra 45kg on board, but, like Brian says the difference will be no worse than comparing a car on fumes to one with a brimmed tank.
Yes, you can probably feel the difference, but its not going to suddenly turn the car into a death trap!

Survived the trip!matt86 wrote:lolhandling seems better, but not fun stuck on the m5 when its 1 degree. You will get 3 wheels in the boot if you remove the spare and one on the back seat, put something down to avoid your rear bench getting grubby though.
Did exactly this and now have 4 perfect refurbished 16" alpinas to fit to my granite silver convertible on Tuesday....happy days!
Plus, I got to see Leicester for the first time!

i knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but it had to be on a Sunday when all the tyre garages are closed. Need a nice steel wheel for the boot now.alexdejonghe wrote:Survived the trip!matt86 wrote:lolhandling seems better, but not fun stuck on the m5 when its 1 degree. Wouldn't you need an alloy of the same diameter as the set you're running?matt86 wrote:i knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but it had to be on a Sunday when all the tyre garages are closed. ideally yes but whenever is a spare the same size anyway. They are all spacesavers nowadays and its only to get you home anyway.alexdejonghe wrote:Wouldn't you need an alloy of the same diameter as the set you're running?matt86 wrote:i knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but it had to be on a Sunday when all the tyre garages are closed. No, the smaller diameter wheel should be fitted with a higher profile tyre, to keep the rolling radius the same.alexdejonghe wrote:

195/65 x 14 is almost the same circumference as 205/55 x 15.
