Hi
im in the process of getting rid of my m42 & going for an m50..
Im supposed to be picking up an m50b20 next week.
My target is to stroke it to 2.8 or more and eventually turbo it.
Aiming maybe around 400ish bhp

I just have some questions:

1) What internals should i get to be strong enough and not end up with high CR? m52b28 or m54b30 or else?

2) I have found a post about this (saying theyre the same) but i want to make sure of it.. are the b20 and b25 blocks the same? meaning i can safely bore it to 84mm?

Thats about it for now.. Thanks for your help

P.S. before i get stones thrown at me :o: reason i went for a b20 is because im not from the UK and here in Malta licence difference from b20 to b25 is about twice as much.. so i will be paying for a 2.0l engine when its actually 2.8+ hopefully

An m50 will handle 500hp fine with nothing more than a thicker MLS head gasket and ARP head bolts.

Block is the same. Use pistons, rods and crank from an m52. Not a bad idea using the b20 block as it will have a fresh bore.

Seems a lot of work just for an engine number, the head combustion chamber and valves are smaller also

I thought the only difference was that the m50 head has 2 coolant temp sensor holes whilst the m52 has them combined in 1. is there alot of difference?

hmm should i have any issues due to the head?

P.S. The m50b20 is a Non-Vanos

I think i can get a whole m52tub28 at a good price to use for crank/pistons/rods.

if the b20 head is an issue I can use the b28 head though i don't really wanna go into sorting dual-vanos with a stand alone managment

Head won't fit. Could always get one off an m50b25 but as Dan said this is all a lot of effort. If I were you I would use an m50b25 with the mods I mentioned earlier. That will handle 500hp, more than your initial needs and spend the money you saved on not building a stroker on tax.

maybe i can give a clearer picture altough im not really sure how much road tax costs in the uk.

here road tax for a b25 is almost £490 annually whilst for the b20 its around £240.. thats about £1000 less in 4 years which means if i spend more money now.. in the long run it would be worth it atleast meh thinks.

cant i work with a b20 head? is it because the b20 head is made for 80mm bore? meaning this will result in higher compression?

Im sure the B20 has smaller valves and smaller combustion chamber, I will measure one tomorrow and compare to a B25 if I have time

thanks for your effort mate. Im not in a hurry.. Thanks alot ;)

there arent any modified bimmers on the island (mainly japanese cars) and people i can ask so i have to rely on the forum.

most people just buy & drive a bmw here & some just put japanese engines in them

found for sale crank/pistons/rods and an m50b25 head at a good price..

but the head is a vanos head and has no cams. would it be an issue if just use my cams on the head since mine are non vanos? and i would prefer it without vanos (less things to worry about :) )

i will be using a mls .140 gasket and arp head bolts.

should i use arp bolts for flywheel and rods too?

this should get me a good turbo solid engine right?

Unless you plan on 8k rpm + Then you don´t need ARP for rods or flywheel.
Lots of people are doing great below 8k rpm without those.

Small Update...

Recieved Cranks/Rods/Pistons
Dismantled whole Engine

My current idea of the Finished Engine

Non Vanos
M50B20 Bored to 84mm
B28 crank/rods/pistons
MLS .140" Gasket
ARP Head & Rod Bolts
ACL Race series Bearings (All)
New Gaskets/Seals/Piston rings (All)

Balancing of crank with M20 Flywheel
Sachs 618 Pressure Plate
6 Pad clutch

Front Mounted Big Intercooler
Oil cooler
Custom Turbo Manifold

Still not sure about turbo size (?) and injectors (600cc?)

as for ecu im trying to look into getting an AEM. my mate likes it alot on his jdm 4 pot but im not sure how im going to make it run a 6 pot

Any opinion or tips on how i can improve the build or any bit of help is appreciated..

also the b20 NV rods are much ticker than the b28 ones. which should i use? i can post a picture comparison if that helps

If you can machine the pistons instead of using an MLS gasket, the BMW block isn´t designed to use one, you can that way just use a good BMW headgasket and you´ll never have any problems, If I was doing another 2.8 turbo stroker that is what I would do.

are the pistons thick enough to be machined?

I might get more ideas there and i dont want to start a whole new thread over there..
