Took the intake manifold off tonight to prep it up for painting and found a few issues that are most likely the cause of the rich running. The breather pipe to the cam cover is split as is the bung on the underside of the TB. Both of which I have replcaments for fortunatly.

Anyway when removing the fuel line that comes from the back of the engine bay to the fuel rail I found that end of the pipe where it connects to the rail is split so the question is where can I get some replcament pipe, dealer only or somewhere else? It have 6mm x 13mm stamped on it.

Also intake manifold gaskets could do with being replaced, again dealer only?

Last thing, anything else I should consider replacing when putting it back together?

A split breather pipe and missing tank vent hose bung will both cause lean running, not rich.
6mm bore high pressure fuel hose is readily available from any motor factors, but I've found it to have a much shorter service life than the BMW original.
Inlet manifold gaskets on their own are probably dealer only, but readily available elsewhere as part of a head gasket set.

I am able to buy inlet gaskets only at my local GSF.

I would be inspecting C191(injector loom/engine loom connector)for water ingress and corroded connections whilst it is easy to get at.
I would also replace the O rings(try GSF first!)at each end of the crankcase breather, possibly it's spring and washer too. When re-building this part, compress the spring with a couple of plastic zip ties, slide it as far as possible into the crankcase, mount the inlet, then cut the ties and guide the pipe home.

Thanks Brian and Malc, I have found the gaskets and fuel pipe on GSF, trying to find the O rings on RealOEM at the moment, the washer and spring once cleaned up look to be serviceable.

When fitting new intake and TB gaskets should I use some gasket paste?

All loom wiring and connections will be inspected today whilst everything else is out the way.
A split breather pipe and missing tank vent hose bung will both cause lean running, not rich.
There is a very strong smell of fuel from the exhaust and the plugs are black which led my thinking to it running rich, there is no oil contamination and it doesnt run hot so I thought that rules out any issue with the head gasket. But the smell of fuel could be the split pipe as well I was thinking.

Trying to establish all vacum pipes are good and rule out all air leaks before moving on to the TPS, ICV and AFM. Blue sensor has tested good at the sensor and the ECU.

If you are satisfied that both mating surfaces are clean and flat, nothing other than the gasket should be needed.

I used stainless nylock nuts last time I had my inlet manifold off,my thinking was that they would help to prevent the thing 'creeping' away from the head.

One more question, when cleaning up the block is it best to have the breather pipe in the crank case? At the moment I stuffed a rag in the whole but I am going to give it a clean up before re-assembly.

Its all a bit grotty so thought it would be another job worth doing.

Just make sure the hole is covered by a rag so no dirt can enter, also when cleaning around the inlets on the head be careful, i stuffed those with kitchen roll so no crap could get in. Also make sure to torque the nuts on the manifold when retightening, its easy to overdo them and snap a stud. I can't remember the torque setting though...

Gaskets from the dealer cost [in 2010]

£1.31 x 4 11611726010
£2.89 x 1 11611726012

Difficult to see the sides of the block when the engine is installed and all the bits bolted on!

But yes,a de-oil and general clean up will make it much easier to put back together and also help with tracing any future leaks.
Good idea to block of the breather hole into the crankcase, rubbish sloshing about in the oil will get caught by the strainer on the oil pump, but it's best not there in the first place!

Thaks folks, I have put up a post in the parts section for cotswalds for all the bits and some other things I need, and picked up some fule pipe there at lunch time.

The closest GSF is 40 miles away and based roughly on tha881 \ real oem prices they look to be pretty close.
