I'm starting to make a list of the necessities for cleaning up the floor pans.
I've got the replacement bungs and part numbers so that's that covered!
Can you still get the sound deadening from BM?
What would be the proper way to approach this job?
Grind back rust, treat with something chemical like BH... then respray?

Also.. rather than starting another thread for a simple question.
What is the colour code/name of the silver on bbs wheels? Does it come in heat resistant form for rocker covers.
Cheers
Robert

Hi Robert, this is the process I went for;
Grind/sand back to bare metal with whatever your tools of choice are, this includes getting up the seam sealer.
Any signs of rust/pitting treat with a rust treatment, BH stuff seems to be the in thing for this at the moment.
Once treated via the products instructions I dusted on a coating of etch primer, then fully primed with zinc primer.
Seam sealed where needed, painted with the top coat and then lacquered for extra moisture resistance.
Then I put the sound deadening down, make sure you use a heat gun and roller to get it sealed to the surface, you pretty much melt it so moisture can't get under and gaps.
I then sunk Waxoyl into all the chassis rails and sills before putting the plastic bungs back in.
This is the sound deadening me and Meatballs82 have both used, was recommended to us by DanThe. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220649059457? ... 1439.l2649

I've been using a wirewheel or cupped wirewheel to clean back most of the rust and then slap on some deox gel with cling film over it and leave it to do it's thing. I found the knotted wirewheels to be able to shred the metal, the ones with copper coated strands is much easier on everything so much so you can strip underseal away but not the primer.
The sound deadening comes of with a spatula and some heat if needed. Xworks bought sound deadening from BMW, wasn't for the E30 but same/similar stuff in big sheets. Or you could get some good audio stuff and go at it properly.

Cheers Dave. That's alot of different products
Did you blow over the top with the same colour as the car? (silver?) I don't want to leave the floor pans like Josephs coat.
Would you put the zinc primer down first?
Jozi, is this what you used and how long did you leave it on for.

I plan on painting the rocker cover when doing this work but don't know what the silver on the bbs wheels is called and if it comes in heat resistant form.
Better half is going to have my man vegetables for disappearing this weekend.

The etch has a better grip in/on the metal than a zinc would achieve, zinc has better rust prevention properties.
Thats exactly the stuff I used! I'm not really sure how much you would need for the whole floor, I'd go with at least 2. It kind of depends on how bad the rust is and how much of it you apply, I covered about 75% of the top of my fuel tank with about 1/5 a tub if it's of any sort of reference.
Cleancar.ie have it also, http://www.cleancar.ie/bilt-hamber-deox-gel.html no idea on shipping prices to NI though, it's more or less the same price as on ebay
Wurth have a alloy wheel silver but no idea what it's like! Would a silver heat resistant paint not be ok?

I used the light dusting of etch primer to give the zinc primer something to grip to, was still enough bare metal for the zinc to do its job.
My car is Polaris so I get away with using alloy wheel silver for things like that as its prett my much the same colour. Which also answers your above question, BMW alloys are painted in Polaris Silver. I'd just use a heat proof generic silver on the engine bits since Polaris is just a basic silver.

that deadening above is what i also purchased its good stuff and you get loads !!
you may want to get the dash out bab and properly inspect the bulkhead and around the brackets, worry about things like the rocker later, saying that ive beenw eighing up what to do with mine, but treat the bay as a seperate job once all the hard work is done

The Dash has been out for months Polsta. It's the putting it back in that I'm worried about
I'd like to find a silver as close to the alloys as possible (Is that sad?) and thanks for the advice chaps.
I will get the sound deadening , zinc & etch primer sorted soon.

Eastwood's Rubberized Rust Encapsulator, it has sound deadening properties as well.
