Looking for a 19mm deep socket that has the hex type head where the wrench attaches.
Which looks like this:

I cant seem to find them online any ideas?
Basically so I can do the spanner \ wrench trick to get the top nut off the front strut as shown in the wiki.
http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... ing_Struts
I tried using the mole grips way but it just splips on the round socket that I have.
I can't get the struts to a garage to use the windy gun to take the nut off due to work.

I've ground flats onto the side of a normal socket to be able to hold it with an adjustable spanner, worth a go if you've got a spare?
cheers,

Try getting your hands on a swan necked combination spanner. I might have a couple of spares knocking around l'll have a look.

I have a box spanner that I use in combination with a quarter inch drive socket for this job.I feed the small socket down the middle of the box spanner and use the spanner's tommy bar to loosen the 19mm nut.

That was going to be my last resort, but the one I have is thin walled so there is not much metal.harry_p wrote:I've ground flats onto the side of a normal socket to be able to hold it with an adjustable spanner, worth a go if you've got a spare?

Yeah, box spanners are open-ended but, as you can see, the bar you slide through to turn them will interfere with anything protruding through the socket.
They are handy, but you need to buy good ones - I've bent plenty of shite chinese ones and gave up on them.

No idea on the quality as long as they last long enough to do the job, but it looks like they have a hex end that i can get a spanner on to so hopefully it works.Grrrmachine wrote:Yeah, box spanners are open-ended but, as you can see, the bar you slide through to turn them will interfere with anything protruding through the socket.

To be honest this should be the last time the struts get stripped as I replaced the springs, dampers, bump stops and dust covers last year and this time it's the top mounts, washers and spring pads as I have a knock comming from the passenger side one and I think I forgot to put the washer that goes between the insert and the top mount back in last time.

Yes,that's the sort of kit I use, almost certain mine came from a BMW toolkit....
Important bit is the slender extension bar for the small socket you need on the centre nut, needs to be both long enough to pass through the box spanner and slender enough to allow the box spanner's tommy bar to pass it.

Get a cheap 19mm mid length socket from halfords, grind down the sides and use an adjustable wrench and stick an allan key through it.

I have a 1/4", 1/2" and 3/8" ratchet set and extensions for each so fingers crossed on of them should be slim enough.daimlerman wrote:Yes,that's the sort of kit I use, almost certain mine came from a BMW toolkit....

The alan key wont work as the boge turbo dampers have a hex head on them and not the alan key hole.capnmchl wrote:Get a cheap 19mm mid length socket from halfords, grind down the sides and use an adjustable wrench and stick an allan key through it.

Touche. Could try a 1/4" drive socket on an extension down there. If the 19mm is 1/2" drive, then it should fit. They're usually only 6mm or so for those.

The box spanners were dispatched this afternoon so hopefully they work. If it does ill do a more detailed write up for the wiki with loads of pictures on dismantling the struts as its a bit lacking in pictures.
