On the M20 upper timing belt cover there are a couple of small cut-outs with a plastic tab pushed into them, what are they for?

the plastic tab should be a retaining clip, it's used for holding the cover for the oil switch and CPS wires and is important for keeping them away from moving parts,

As above, the plastic 'tabs' are what's left of the clips. A couple of 5mm holes, 15mm apart each side with cable ties threaded through them is a good substitute.
