the actual spraying, isnt a lot of work verde, youd be much better off getting someone to lay the paint on for say £200 if you did everything else and supplied all materials, things like having the gun working perfect fine tuned, like a tattoo gun..can make a difference between good/bad

Polsta a bare metal respray on turd that needs repairs etc is obviously going to come in at over £800.polsta wrote:^^ that was point tho, a decent re spray by anyone with more than 2 lazy eyes and no arms is more than £800, a quick cowboy blow over with minimal prep by a cowboy maybe so, ie £350-400 in materials say, rush it in out in a day or so, and thats a few ton for a days work for them, but would you want that on a nice car ?
But if you have a car which requires just paint. i.e. very little prep it can be done and at a profit for £800.
Just because someone is cheap it does not make them a cowboy. The fella I use has very little overheads and is now in his late 60's, he does this because he still wants to work rather than turn into a OAP vegtable who's hightlight of the day is not shitting themself and watching Jeremy Kyle. Even if he makes £100 a day out of it thats still £26K per year, which considering the national average wage in scotland is £20K per year means he's not doing it for nothing.

Previous owner to me had my car painted, looked lovely when I bought it. Now over the Winter, this has happened, it's microblistered....

This is apparently due to poor preparation, and either moisture in the air line but most likely moisture in the primer, so it would have reacted at some point, but the frost over the winter has sped it up and now needs more paint with even more prep required.
This is why I'm now preparing for a £2000 respray.

I seem to remember a silver sport parked up in a yard near Cheadle railway line, it looks similar to yours but I could be wrong.

when you rub down, prep, paint, something yourself even like a spoiler, its a total ball and arm ache to do properly, imagine a whole car and the skill and time to get it perfect !! you just wouldnt want to do it properly and put the graft in to a whole car for a few hundred quid ??? fook that

Fortunately, it seems localised mostly to the leading edge of the bonnet, so I imagine it's needed stone chips etc flatting out and primering and they've just not given the primer time to cure, or it's been done in a cold damp body shop.
As it happens it just gives me a kick up the arse to get it resprayed, as there were a few blemishes I wanted sorting anyway, so going to get the kit pulled of, sort out anything lurking beneath, and have the whole thing done

The blue one's are almost common,I had trouble deciding when I bought mine as to what colour it should be painted.I was very tempted to completely strip the shell and go for laches silver to match my touring, but, then I discovered just how few Neon Green one's were left and felt that it was just wrong not to re-paint in this colour.Saved me having to have the engine bay painted as well as saving a considerable amount with the painter!snakebrain wrote:Three or four years ago there always seemed to be about 3 or 4 of the Neon convertibles on ebay. Neon Green is very much a 'Marmite' colour, people not involved in'the scene' always tell me how much they like it,so I do feel that I made the right choice.

Thats why im loathed to pay 3 grand for some monkey iv never mate to spray my car. Cos at the end of the day no matter how much you pay its a fucking gamble. Iv sprayed a lot of bike parts and I know sometimes things cock up. Id rather be responsible for my own mistakes and have paid 300 quid rather than paid some goon 4k to piss it up for me

I had a bumper painted there a while back, he only charged me £100, probably just about covered paint and materials. Yet when I wasn't 100% happy he took it back and re-did it personally, no questions asked. He's old school and thinks the job should be right regardless of what you paid.
I wouldn't trust an average Joe offering me cheap paintwork that I didn't know though

very true verde, lifes full of what ifs...
If you fook up your paint job, how would it have looked if you got a professional to lay down the paint would be replaying in your mind.
But of you got it done by a professional and he does a half ass'd job, then you'd be thinking to yourself that you could have done a better job at a third of the cost
Its all a gamble
I personally wouldn't pay £2K plus for a paintjob as my car is not a garage queen and im a lazy git who looks for a parking spot closest to where im going rather then away from everthing so that it doesnt get hit by trolleys or wankers in their micras who open their doors until it hits your rubstrip

Don't get me wrong, if I was using the car every day, which I used to, I wouldn't want to spend that much. But now it sits pretty on the drive most of the time and it's going to be used primarily for shows so I want it to look pristine, or at least as best I can have it to look.

just think you have the right idea mate, do research see some previous work etc, as you say your in a good position as you know the garage well.
but id say the same goes for anyone looking to get a respray if you paying big bucks and it feels like a gamble go else where.
price doesn't always equal a good job anyway, experience and knowing what your doing normally does.
shame your so far away verde, theres a cracking body shop i use often in worcester.

BUT , if you do some research, or actualy know hes decent, things like that verde says is a load of nonsese - a top draw paint sprayer, is like a top draw tattoo artist, its a lot of word of mouth and reputation and quality speaks for itself, they put their name to it and have pride in it !! if in 6 months or a year, an issue crops up, they would sort it straight out no question, most importantly they do it properly and know what they are doing so there are no issues
take my sprayer for example, a renowned reputation around here for being the man, a lot of people wont even think about going anywhere else, he re sprays front end of my range rover over a year ago on recomendtion after doing mates cars-flawless, drove it for a year in all weather and snow and ice sun and rain, and its still flawless, recomended to jimbo he popped up to chat to him see other work, ended up getting the cab done and it looks beautiful, turk on here the same with his m3
thats 2 jobs he got from me after getting my job from a mate, etc etc etc...and i then go back for my car to be done, thats reputation.
people like that are worth the money, you look at their paint jobs, its not "a re spray" its a paint job you actualy admire and think "f**k me look at that" and something once done your actualy glad and proud you did coz its like art , LOL you cant replicate that sort of thing at home in your back garden or even come remotley close

of course, belive me i didnt want to be forking out all i have on my car when i got it, his work isnt cheap but you get what you pay for and once done and paid for, your glad you did and your amazed with it, not just pleased/happy , same as getting an amazing tattoo- you admire it ,but...its only worth doing on a very nice car, as above- not one you beat around in all day every day getting marks and dings, you cant do everything else on a car right, then let it down with a poor paint job theres no point, same as theres no point putting that sort of paint job on a car that doesnt quite warrant or need it

Definately, but its a very case specific thing. If my car was a genuine motorsport id save up, but the reality is its a converted 316 thats far from a gem. In the same sense maybe the OPs car isnt a gem and a 4k paint job would be wasted on it.

Most decent painters would be dubious to take on that deal, and it can also be false economy. In the best case a painter can get supplies a lot cheaper than you can, so you're paying more. In the worst case, painter doesn't know what primers, fillers, fixers and thinners were used, and when he starts using his own chemicals he will cause a serious reaction to all your prep work, which wastes time and material and costs more than just letting the pro do it all in the first place.verde wrote:I would be providing all the paint ETC and the car would be fully prepped ready to spray the top coat on.
I painted my own car. It wasn't my first time painting, but I still didn't do a pro job on it and I'll have to spend more on tools and materials to sort out the niggly little stuff. And considering I had to buy all the tools to start with, there's no way my home spray job came out cheaper than using a pro. And I'll have to do three or four full cars to get my money's worth out of the equipment.
Blowing over the P40'd repairs on a VW is one thing, but I'm very reluctant to do another full respray myself.

A few years ago, I would of said a grand minimum would get you a half decent paint job. However, times have changed and it's more expensive now. As said through the whole thread, the prep work undertaken dictates how good the final finish will be, but also takes the most time and therefore the most money.
I'm also a believer of all or nothing. If you do the prep work and take it to the bodyshop and they spray it, then any flaws later on are pretty much certainly down to your prep work. Therefore, the body shop really doesn't have to give two shits about sorting it out. However, if you leave everything to them then it's their problem if it starts to turn nasty. Like Grrrmachine said, how do they know that the chemicals you've used won't react, or your prep wasn't good enough to get a decent finish.
I have a friend who works in a bodyshop, and will respray a car in the evenings for about £300. However, he won't do any prep work and you have to supply everything. So that £300 is going to heat and light the place, run the compressor, and feeding him. His work is alright, not amazing, but for £300 and a days hard graft you can't complain. I'm yet to see the results long term though.

I had mine done at BMW and was pleasantly surprised with the overall cost. It was worked on by the old timers who worked on them first time round it was a refreshing change for them from working on insurance jobs and modern metal.

I have just had my E39 front end painted.
I am a peodo when it comes to paint
I hate the quality of modern paint finishes.
If you can get your car to York try RCP.
The lads name is Damion. He is a young ford pervert. Stays away from insurance work
I'm very impressed with his work and prices.
