Been quoted £800 to respray my pinkish BM Red again

The guy is local and said he would treat all rusty bits and take out to minor dings, also repair a hole in the scuttle panel for £800

Is it just me or is that an absolute bargain?

The guy loves my car lol

sometimes a cheap job is cheap for a reason.

Ask to look at some of his previous work.

£800 seems cheap. Ask to see some of his other stuff, thats a year or more old.

You can spend £800 now then £1600 (Guess price) later on in the year when it needs doing again, or just £1600 once...

But, it all depends on the quality he can do

If you don't intend on keeping the car for a long that'll be fine for your short term satisfaction, otherwise get it done properly. I'm budgeting 3 times that for my respray.

The glass is staying in, he says he is going to take bumpers/lights off. IF its a cheap job what could happen? surely paint will adhere to anything :/

I can't see how someone can do a respray for £800.

Materials aren't cheap. £250 for paint give or take. Masking tape, paper abrasives etc. probably £4-500 in materials.

Even if its a quick rub down (which it never is), mask, then paint. There's still a couple of days. £200 a day is very cheap.

Just my take on things

You could get overspray on the window rubbers/door seals, and the paint may develop microblisters if sprayed in a damp atmosphere.

Professional bodyshops take strenuous efforts to ensure that the spray booth is kept clean and at the correct temperature.

Dont go by price, ask to see some of his previous work.

My mates lil brother front ended his A3, he got a quick fix job done for £350 all in. New bonnet, grill and radiator (not new from a scrappy) painted front end inc wings and repaired cracked front bumper.

Result- out of line bonnet, poor paint blending skills, the paint felt rough and looked it too. Tho we wasn't expecting an amazing job, but if it was my own car i'd be expecting the front end to look faultless and almost like new. Unlike this job where the original 10year old paint job looked fresher then this new lick of paint.

Dont be a sucker for price, if your going to get it done get it done once and properly

Paul - tread very carefully where paint's concerned. It's expensive to put right if it's not a great job first time round. In general, a 'guy from the internet's mate' is not a solid recommendation!

Not sure how handy you are but you could always take the windows and trim sections off for him. Maybe sand down some of the rust see if it needs welding etc. Would help him do an even better job.

so if its shit, they have got your car, your not going to pay them and it all gets messy, you seem to have made up your mind regardless of the comments, so why ask ?

as above- my mates whos a sprayer says the same its £400 for materials alone, take the glass out yourself or get a pro too, and to re fit them , ask yourself - a sprayer can make £200 on a quick half day job with no aggro ie do a bonnet and a wing, you think hes going to really spend days on the prep and do it properly, primer it, then sand, re primer bits, sand, sand, get it perfect, all the masking and removal/refitting of parts, all the polishing and whatever, for like £400

it will probably look great, youl hand over £800 post a load of pics think youve had it off

6 months a year later youl have bits bubbling up and issues a plenty and wil regret it !

cars are alwys getting crashed and re painted, insurance companies, any decent sprayer is always a busy busy man, someone whos been in it 20 years and hasnt got much work.. use your loaf !!

To look at it another way, how much is your car worth and how long will you be keeping it?
There's little point in spending £3k on your paint if the car is worth £750 and likely to die in the next year or so.
If £800 extends its life by another 3 years then I'd say it's worth doing, even if it isn't concours.

Polsta, thats not necessarily true. The painter I have used for years takes far less than most body shops but thats for good reason. He owns his premises, equipment everything outright.

His only costs is materials, gas, electric and rates. A blow over is circa £800 for a non metallic color and the fella has been in business for over 30 years. He doesn't do insurance work as he finds it a pain in the arse and financially crippling waiting for up to 90 days for payment so it's generally half up front half on completion and I can say I have never had an issue.

Not every body shop out there has owners that are only in it to make huge profits.

To the OP though recomendations from previous happy customers and viewing of previous work is a must.

$£%"£ I'm on my way to Ayrshire this summer!
This could be the new format for the Zone Roam.... park your rusty turds at the painters and get hammered in a hotel for a week!

This is how my cabbie came back from the painter;

Then there were a couple of weeks of re-fitting all the trim back.

Cost?
£1390.

Still looks good three years on.

Verde I'll need get it off him, I alway just go to his unit rather than phoning as he wont price anything over the phone.

the cab is hopefully going into him in the summer for a full respray. It will be more expensive than £800 for me though as he's doing more than just a blow over.

^^ that was point tho, a decent re spray by anyone with more than 2 lazy eyes and no arms is more than £800, a quick cowboy blow over with minimal prep by a cowboy maybe so, ie £350-400 in materials say, rush it in out in a day or so, and thats a few ton for a days work for them, but would you want that on a nice car ?

I think wev already discussed my car will be a ghetto superstar and im sure his work couldnt be worse than mine, depends though as the colour i want is metallic. I would be providing all the paint ETC and the car would be fully prepped ready to spray the top coat on. Il see, might just do it myself like planned
