Just needed to share the huge improvement I have just got when we removed the catalytic converter from my 318is.
The car is new to me (two months ish) however I do 400 miles a week, so I have been putting some time in... However I increasingly doubted that I was getting full power. The symptoms were not much torque at low revs and lack of anger (for want of a better description) at high revs.
My engineer and I did a mental list of possible problems, top of which was exhaust back-pressure. Next time it was on the ramp the front box came off and 30 minutes later with a big hammer and a steel pipe, we smashed out the contents of the box onto the workshop floor. No more cat. (I was going to add a photo of the shit that came out, but cant work how to...)
What a difference! All symptoms cured, and then some. I can’t be alone with this problem”¦ a 22 year old cat blocking things up. Worth doing.
Got a 318is? Loose the CAT!
