Quite right Rob :o:

All being well, by the time Dan has got the donk ready most other jobs will be done prior to getting it painted, that's the idea anyway. Job I'm dreading the most is stripping the Recaros down!

I've done Sport and Comfort seats but never touched Recaros. In theory they should be similar I suppose.

Wasn't sure that is was meant to be looking like, spoke to Matt as I'd knew he'd used it and neither of use were sure. I decided to get the heat gun into action to dry off the water and the Fertan just started turning to dust so with a quick wipe with a kitchen towel I was left with this;

It's now had a couple of cost of etch primer and then zinc primer.

Tomorrow I'll be cracking out the seam sealer and then hopefully get a couple of coats of paint down. The heat gun will be working over time again to take the chill out of the surfaces prior to paint and then to get it drying well.
when the fertan is black, thats when its worked and cured it , you shoudnt of rubbed that off and painted straight over the top of that, and the fertan stays dormant and protecting

Bare in mind the vast majority of that metal was good clean metal and therefore no rust for it to convert and then stay black, the only area of doubt was what might have been down the back the the floor/bulkhead seem that I couldn't really get to.

It says that anything that turned to dust should be wiped away which is what I did, the reason it needed the help of th heat gun was because the Fertan hadn't fully dried in the week it was down. Anywhere there was a slight bit of pitting the black Fertan stayed.

Had a couple of hours on the car on Friday. Got the sound deadening back down in the areas I'd lifted it. Then out came the Waxoyl, any hole I could get the tube in was loaded with the stuff, so that's the inside of the chassis rail (pictured) the inner sill and bottom of the A-piller, below where the speakers sit.

Image

End of this week I want to get the electic window mechs and looms fitted along with any stereo wiring I need to run front to back. By the time that's done I'll hopefully have sourced the foam I need for under my carpet.

This is what my carpet is like underneath,

Cheers guys, it's certainly been a longer job than anticipated.

Little progress update (lacking pictures of the work at the moment though). New central locking wiring loom has been fitted which also includes the wiring for electric windows, will be a nice little upgrade from the povo spec manual windows. Last weekend I pulled off the front valance to attack all the little scabs on the front panel, was a real sad annoying job since it was so fiddly, it then got a dose of Fertan but when I got there today it was still wet after a week so gave it a blast with the heat gun, hopefully it'll be better tomorrow and I can crack on with priming. The valance is mint inside, again like many other parts of this car it's had wax protection at some point early in it's life.

Away from actual work on the car there's been a development with the interior, was totally unplanned. Originally I was going to be using my Houndstooth Recaros and retrim them in fabric I had.

However Ferg tipped me off that Barry was selling his leatherzzzz winkeye

Image

It was an opportunity I couldn't bring myself to pass on even though I'm not a big leather fan, the man above has since quickly relieved me of the houndstooth and I think has had the horn in all week :chuckle:

Don't think he really knows to be honest Rob, he mentioned a couple of options he was looking into. Still think he was mental wanting rid of these but I weren't going to try taking him around.

I thought Recaro LS's in Leather were the ultimate E30 OEM spec seat ? Won't anything else be a downgrade ?
Unless he's gone for some sort of M3 option or shock-horror non OEM 8O

Just a little update on this, not really been up to much with this lately.

While the engine is out again I've had the front valance off and ground back all the little scabs on the front panel and repainted it so it's up to standard with what the rest of the car will be.

Grinding work in progress,
Image

Freshly painted;
Image

Matt got me some 3M cavity wax in aerosols to try out;
Image

Really impressed with it as it's barely visible against the Polaris unlike Waxoyl, on initially application it does look like someone has spunked allover your car :o: ;
Image

It's dries nice and clear, but still being tacky it's probably going to be a dirt magnet so hoping that by the time this hits the road it'll have lost the tackiness;
Image

Front valance is now back on. Underside of the section in front of the front wheel arches have had the same treatment, along with the section under the scuttle, airbox and wiper motor have both been out to aid in this and then the whole scuttle are has been dosed in Waxoyl.

The rust has been chopped out of the battery tray as well, really don't know why I didn't do this ages ago as it's now holding me up from getting the dash back in while I wait for my mates Dad to come weld it up. :banghead: At least now the only rust left on the car is in the rear section of nearside sill :)
Image

Carpet is now back in after eventually sourcing the underlay I needed thanks to a very charitable donation from Ferg. After several weeks drip drying in the garage and being blasted with an electric heater I still needed to resort to ripping bits of the foam off the rubber top and hanging it on the airier to get it dry and then gluing it back together.
Image

All worth it though;
Image

Been gathering up many new trim parts as well over the past month or so ready for putting putting that all back together while I'm not spending out much on other things for the car :D Also managed to get hold of a rare BBS boot spoiler thanks to Magpie, I think it looks better than a Tech 1 spoiler and also has the benefit of being stuck on so I won't need to swap over the spare lid to run it.

Onto the engine build. Dan is still working away with this fitting it around his day to day work so progress is steady but it's one of these builds that keeps getting held up by then need of a missing part or extra measuring/testing.

As you've seen the head has been built back up and now the cam has been fitted. The bottom end has been bolted together as well, standard 325i block, very early small webbed 328i crank, 320i conrods and high comp 325i pistons.

Image
Image

It's now been trial built to check tolerances and the valve to piston gap is a little close for comfort, approx 1mm and should ideally be around 1.5mm and this is before any meat has been taken off the block to increase the CR as planned to the pistons are now going to need the valve reliefs machining deeper to allow for the extra lift from the cam and whatever amount is going to be machined off the top of the block.

Inlet;
Image

Exhaust;
Image

This was timed using the standard cam pulley, this will once complete be fitted with a vernier Dan is having made to get the timing spot on

Time for a quick update since I'm mega bored on a night shift, only 10hrs to go :cry:
Not been much progress lately, most my recent spare time has been spent playing around on my mountain bike or new motorbike so this and the Golf have taken a bit of a back burner so not much progress has been made recently.

Battery tray was welded up a while ago and I've since painted it up and the bulkhead trim fitted;
Image
Image
Image

Most of the interior has now been thrown in as well. A lot of it needs cleaning and fitting properly but it's nice not having it taking up space in the house at long last.
Image
Image

I'd also got a battered and faded rear parcel shelf with a blind fitted that has had great big holes cut into it for some 6x9s so thought I'd have a quick go at tidying it up with some acoustic material I'd got knocking around. As the shelf is only made of a thin hardboard type material I just used a couple of layers of thick cardboard, one glued to the underside and then another cut into the shape of the 6x9 on top to give the level of the original board. Its by no means perfect and needs a bit more tidying up to finish it off but it's certainly a huge improvement and it doesn't even owe me a 1/3 of what these seem to sell for nowadays so all's good. Now just got to grow the balls and fit the clips to the roof which means putting holes in my uber rare black non-sunroof headlining.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Meanwhile steady progress is still being made with the engine as Dan is fitting it around all his other work. He's manage to get a custom vernier pulley made up using a CAD design courtesy of Bullet_Ride and the ring gear from a standard pulley, much cheaper and probably better quality than buying one from someone like CatCams.
Image

Pistons are also back from having 2mm taken out of the valve reliefs to allow more clearance for the Schrick cam once the block have been decked.
Image

So now, in theory it should just be one more trial build to work out exactly how much the block can be decked by, have it decked then it'll hopefully all go back together with no issues.

Well, since work is so quiet and boring at the moment I've found myself back here again so thought I may as well give this a little update, little being the key word here as I've hardly touched the thing....

Dan finished off the engine build for me and the engine is now fitted with just a few finishing touches needed;
Waiting on an Auto TPS from Maggspower as I had to change the loom due to finding the old one to be in a poor state once I started digging under some of the sheathing. Bought a really good one from Trev but it was from an auto which has a totally different plug and more wires for the TPS.
Need to get the airbox mount fitted and lash up a good solution for the return feed to the E36 rad as everything I've tried so far either fouls the PAS bracket or kinks too much for my liking.

Once that's all done and I've checked it fires up all be leaving the engine well alone until the winters done one and I can get it out on the road and run the engine it, hence why I've not done anything with it for so long.

Pistons with poke :cool:
Image

Rods got a bit of a trim and balance (as did the pistons);
