thing is chris- these 3 owner 60k sports blah blah, ok may be very nice and original in a sense, but theya re still old ! i have no idea, but i wonder what it would all be like under the dash and carpets and sealant
we would all love such a car, but lets face it there arnt many of those, and they are not "drivers" cars, those are collectors cars, not the sort thats wanted by someone wanting a sport to drive and re kindle ma bit of youth etc, also look at old ford prices for restored cars !! over last 3 or 4 years values have rocketed for 80s cars, soon as all the "base models" dissapeared, so people couldnt easily buy a nice clean mk1 fiesta etc to add parts and make a replica/re shell etc, the values of original restored ones rocketed, i think its only a numbers game with e30s now, fact they were better built and more on the road, but now they are dropping like flies
restored or not- when people want the cars, people will pay the money, restored e30s will very much have their day like the fords, and look at pre 80s fords...without an original part on or maybe 1 original bit of metal
.....
maybe a rough price structure for sports is like this ? (at a guess)
10k- those 2 owner 60k mythical type cars
7-8k like below but with a re built engine etc and whole car to a very very high standard throughout
6-7k a very nice restored example thats no rust with genuine metal all good standard work looks exceptional
5k a fairly nice enough one solid looked after (and like a below one thats been sorted out)
3.5k-4k looks nice bit tired ,upon dash, carpet, sealant back, needs tidying, welding, rust hunt, re furb
2-3k on road with some nice parts but in need of a resto
under 2k - real frag fest sat in a garden rotting needing saving or breaking
but ,how will it go over the comming years ? every how often will they all shunt up to the next pricing bracket, in 18 months even what will a compmplete, but off the road in need of a full resto sport be worth ? 2.53k ? with a

What does "mint" mean ?snakebrain wrote:Sorting out the rusty bits does not make a car mint, or anywhere close to it...Chris_B86 wrote:I imagine that when it's done out of the bodyshop, if I'm lucky it will be worth roughly what it owes me (£4-5k) as although it should be able to be described as mint, it won't be original out of the factory
Perfect and original
Or
Perfect and restored
Is it not true any panel that needs respraying will need respraying in the future something to do with the spraying procedure ?

Btw if u think Sports (bar the exceptional original collector ones) are going to rise in price u only need to look at E21 323i what are they worth £3k ? £4k maybe £5k for a too original collector piece just guessing here. I don't see their demand shooting up. I think unless u got a collector piece your living in dream land that your going to make money on Sports or E30s bar the Sport Evo. But whose to say in 30 years time all the collectors with money then might not be fussed about 1980s sports cars and want the 2010 sport cars etc if u follow my point because that technology is old hat. So much better cars can be had for the money. Not having a go and is only pure speculAtion none of us know. But anyone thinking there gonna make a fortune out of E30s are dreaming.
Look at everyone on the zone tight fuuuukers. No one wants to pay the right price for anything at the "bargain" prices they are now. Do u honestly think bar rich collectors anyone gonna may more in 10 years when even less ????

Just going on what you see for sale at the moment peoples expectation of prices seems to be high. Pretty much everything is 2K+ for a 325i with tax and MOT. So it doesn't seem unreasonable that an almost factory fresh sport would be 10K+.
Personally with mine, its not a sport and its certainly not original but a usable cab. It would be nice to think that it will be worth a bit more than it is currently if I ever go to sell it. But that would also mean finishing it first.

i dont think you really know what your on about, so by your way of thinking any 60s,70s, cars or older , are not worth anything just because 80s cars are more advanced tech wise ? its nothing to do with technology, look how other 80s cars have rocketed up in the last 3 or 4 years, ones that were less amde than e30s and more rust prone...meaning theyve dissapeared a bit quicker than e30s and prices steadily rise or hike even once all the sheds are gone and no more in general on the roads
do you think just a few years ago when fiestas and escorst were about, that a £400 xr2 would be worth 3 or 4 grand just a few years later ? or that an e30 m3 for 6,7k just a few years ago would be 15-20k ? ....ask yourself why do you think people pay 3 or 4 grand for an xr2/3 , when they could go out and buy a different league better car tech wise for 4 grand and newer and nicer ? .....
its not about "collectors" wanting them, its just demand of the people looking for ones to drive and own, people get to certain ages and want to re live memories or get cars they always wanted or their dad had etc, these are not collectors, they are just people wanting cars to own and drive on a sunday or all the time and enjoy owing
no ones expecting them to be worth mega money, but they will increase, thats cast iron.

exactly ! real nice cabs now are worth good figures, i think all of us its the same...we like to think and rightly so, that cars that fall in to our hands and spend a bit of time and money on, are not sitting on a gold mine, BUT, over comming years they will just creep up in value, just meaning your not going to loose out or throwing money away thats allRtaylor2208 wrote:Just going on what you see for sale at the moment peoples expectation of prices seems to be high. Yes these E30s tend to be bought by those reliving their youth.
The E30s may experience some rise in values as the target market become more affluent ie those who want to relive their youth
But as these people die off the values may well dip
The only people that want E types are those who had them when they were younger or aspired to them. Can't speak for everyone but no one else rages about them

If you knew what you were talking about you'd also know that only a couple of years ago you could pick up E21 323i's for around £1500. Good luck doing that now! I'm not saying E21 prices will continue to rise but demand is certainly going up and supply is going the other way as people are jumping on the bandwagon of it being the unloved BMW.pony wrote:Btw if u think Sports (bar the exceptional original collector ones) are going to rise in price u only need to look at E21 323i what are they worth £3k ? £4k maybe £5k for a too original collector piece just guessing here.
All you talk about is how crap E30s are and how amazing newer cars are. Just look at how quick E46 prices have plummeted, a decent 330i can be had for E30 Sport money and they're only going to get cheaper, good E36 328i Sports can easily be had for £1500. These are both better & newer and by your logic should be worth way more than a crappy old E30, but they're not and probably never will be. E46 M3s will never get close to E30 M3 values either (ignoring the CSL).
If car values followed the theme you mention, Mk1 & 2 Escorts would still only be worth a few hundred quid as they're so old and basic.
You are right in one aspect though, no one is going to make fortunes off an E30. Only way to make money (other than breaking them) is if to buy one cheap and sell it quickly without spending anything on it for a substantial markup. To make a £2500 Sport worth £5000 you'll need to spend more than £2500. And if it's a car you're going to running as well you've got to factor in wear and tear maintenance costs.
Beats me why so many folk love talking about what they think their car could be worth, JUST DRIVE THE SODDING THING AND ENJOY IT!!!!

^^ Hahaha. agree. Don't buy an E30 as an investment. Enjoy owing it and using it. Very nice cars, I'm sure we all have that in common?

I think 80s BMW is an excellent investment area right now actually. Anything with an M on it, including the M535i, will appreciate over the next 20 years very nicely..Gert_8 wrote:^^ Hahaha. agree. Don't think are many at all jim, rear arches, rear panel, bit of floor issue and jacking points, are all common things and most tech 1s have had it need them doing at some point, and if all are sorted properly and rest of the car,all trim, morsels, engine, interior are original and it's got original rest of shell, scuttle, lots if history etc and its not a ringer,re shell, cat repair or had major work or crash repair, then that's still pretty original really and the common issues fixed are fairly insignificant really when you concider how many are actually left at all !!jimbom30cab wrote:Does anyone on here actually have a truly mint or very original tech 1 sport ?

But was there an E21 M3? 80s Motorsport-related metal is hugely desirable, hence the massive prices on E30 M3s which are filtering into the rest of the E30 market. The design is also iconic and universally recognised - I bet you've said 'yeah, E30...you know the 80s 3 series, the square one' more than once too....pony wrote:My point is if u look at the E21 323i as a guide they have appreciated maybe a little but not much

In all fairness the main reason I wanted an e30 was because my dad had one and it was the car he always aspired to. The other was that the E30 M3 was a boyhood dream as I was brought up on touring cars. So naturally, not being able to afford the 20k plus for an M3, I plumped for the next best thing, a sport.polsta wrote:

As for people wanting todays cars in 20 years time I don't see it. Mass production, leasing and finance has ruined any future values. I'll give a prime example.
My dads E30 was an 88 316i 4 door, which he bought 10 years old for £3500. In 2011 he bought a 99 E46 316i 4 door so 12 years old, for £1400. Lets not also forfet the inflation between 1998 and 2011 when he bought those cars. This is clear proof that residual values of newer cars are dropping far quickee than they used to, so no, I don't believe that in 20 years time therw will be more of a market for e46/e92 just because thwy have more technology. Nobody aspires to own a new BMW, or in fact any of the new premium cars anymore, because finance and leasing makes them far too accessible, and leaves the used car market flooded with them. I remember when seeing a BMW on the road was a head turner regardless of the model, it just isn't with the new ones

Mint (adj.)
adj. Like new; in brand-new condition; unworn, as a coin recently made at a mint.
adj. Uncirculated; in the same condition as when it was freshly coined at the mint.

I think u have misunderstood me slightly. I never said a E30 is crap. I like E30s very much. I just struggled to understand why someone would pay over £10k for a Sport in the future. Maybe this will happen truth is none of us know.
I think there may be some rise in values but nothing crazy to say these could be potential gold mines.
Cars appeal to certain buyers so the 80s cars appeal to a certain target market. My other issue or question was when these people target market will there be other people besides those who aspired to one in their youth in the 80s or had one ? As the people I mentioned if these are the only target market causing demand they ain't going to be around for ever. Is a very subtle point not sure if u follow what I mean ?
Yes I agree good E46 330/M3s are getting ever closer if not already to Sport prices.

Compare directly, say an E30 325i Sport, to an E46 330ci, you cannot tell me than one day the 330 is going to be as desirable? There's too many of them.
As for an ordinary E46 M3, they're like arse holes, everyone's got one. When the E30 M3, or even the Sport for that matter, was on general sale, it wasn't something you saw very often. Think how often you see an E46 or even E92 M3 on the road?
Obviously their are exceptions to the rule, such as the CSL, the CS, and the 330CS, which are a rarity, and the CSL is already regarded as a modern collectable.
It works across the board, take U-R Quattro, highly sought after, a classic even. I very much doubt that a current S5, or even RS4 to be honest, are going to be regarded in the same way. In fact in my opinion, the last Audi that is likely to achieve that, will be the B5 RS4.
But trying to compare Ferarri's, Porsche's, Bentley's and Maserati's, to BMW's and Audi's etc, well it's just not comparable

Just to prove a point, I've just looked out the office window, and in Lidl car park there's an E92 M3.
Back in the late 80's and 90's, you'd be lucky if your dealer even had an M3 in for display, never mind see one being used for such a mediocre task as going the shop for bread and milk

THIS ! very thing, is what might/could increase prices for the sport, aswell as alpina/hartge models etc, the m3 is an icon and wed all love one, when i bought my old 318is not that long ago-2.5 years, m3s were around 9-12k bracket, now they are 17-20, the run away prices make them not a relistic buy for mr average, and then with the values its a not a car youd want to drive muchChris_B86 wrote: In all fairness the main reason I wanted an e30 was because my dad had one and it was the car he always aspired to. The other was that the E30 M3 was a boyhood dream as I was brought up on touring cars. So naturally, not being able to afford the 20k plus for an M3, I plumped for the next best thing, a sport.
so then people like yourself, will look to other e30s , a sport for 4-7k or whatever will look like a much more realistic and attractive option, there are plenty of people wanting a sport, and the supply is not there in abundance of good ones, which will only mean prices will creep up
