Hi, I've not long got myself a 325i sport as my new daily driver but its got an annoying tappet type rattle at 2 / 3k + revs.
I've set the tappets (cold) and everything seems fine but the noise is still there. You can see slight wear on the cam but nothing that I would say is excessive ?
The cars done 112k

What do you think ?

Wear is more likely on the valve stems and excentrics than it is on the cam in my experience.

When you set the clearances, does the ticking stop for the first few hundred yards of driving, than come back?

It's always fine on tickover - it's when it's got a few revs that the rattle starts - like a little sewing machine.
It doesn't sound any different before or after I set the tappets to be honest.
I wondered if it was just all a bit worn - cam, rockers, rocker shafts, valve stems etc :dunno:

Take the excentric adjusters out and roll them along a glass surface, if there's any notchiness in their "roll" they're ready for the bin.

I tried to kid myself that mine "weren't that bad" for a year and 4 attempts at eliminating the ticky ticky by painfully accurate adjusting of the clearances until I did this and saw the light !

With the new adjusters fitted I adjusted the gaps at the cam end of the rocker to allow for the concaved wear on the valve stem (allowing for the leverage ratio which I forget at the moment) and my engine is almost tick free.
