Well, here we go, the Touring wearing fresh paint!!! So excited, it looks great, I can't wait to put it back together.

John kindly to a couple of progress snaps and I got a couple when I went to have a look earlier, he's got a couple little bits still to do, mainly the boot shut and a coupe bits on the door shuts but i'm picking up tomorrow night.

There we go then, not great pics I know but hopefully you get the idea.

I didn't bother getting the roof done in the end, after much deliberation, there is nothing so badly wrong with it that I can't fix with a rotary and some polishes,

Nice job. Are tha valances being done as well. I remember it took a bit of badger action as the thing flew out past the rear valance?

Sold the 4 door yet?

No Trev, the moredoor is still languishing in the garage, I think i'm going to wait until the new year, fix the issues and MOT it, sell it as a going concern...

The rear valance is going to be sorted at work, the panel guys have taken look and reckon they can straighten it, they'll blend the paint in too. I have a very nice A/C front valance sitting in the garden, having said that you'll never see it anyway once it's hidden behind the cow catcher.

Haven't given it any thought really, John has polished it, but he's old school so its Farecla all the way, to be fair he gets decent finish though, I will need to refine it though, the car will probably go straight in the garage now until the new year, i'll probably Zaino it, still my favourite sealant.

Ok, it's been a while since I made any updates, since the my last one we've moved house, christmas has been and gone, been on holiday etc etc....
The last three weekends have been spent re commissioning the old girl, this included rebuilding three of the four doors, bumpers, various bits of trim, all sorts really, it's still not finished, the SE side skirts have got to go back on, I need to buy a new tailgate as the old one is too rotten really, the rear valance has got be straightened and repainted (work are doing that) i've also got to try and find the badges, these seem to have disappeared in the house move which is typical really!!!!

Any way here we go, taken in the yard today at work after a quick wash, when the weather gets better I will be doing a full wet flat and polish.

It will in due course be getting the full Alpina war paint, my heart says gold but thats undecided yet... before any of that I need to flat and polish the paint the whole car, it's got a bit of "peel" that I need to get rid of. It will be getting new Alpina badges too, I did find the ones that came off but sadly my restoration process saw them in the bin :o: Wheels are going to be re powder coated to, I had a whinge at the bloke that did them last time and he's agreed to do them again personally instead of one of his morons... I also priced up a brand new tailgate, £350 + £200 for the new rear screen, it will get done but need to save some pennies.

Silver steve. Will tie in better with the trim. If it had neutral / tan or black interior then I'd be saying gold.

Its looking nice though.

£200 for a new rear screen? Is that from the dealer? I've been quoted double that from various car glass places.

Dave? Ed! :)
That's a good [rice, problem is, has anyone ever successfully removed a touring rear screen? It seems near impossible.

Cutting a screen out is easy, you need some square profile cutting wire, T handles or ezi wire and off you go, about 10 mins work on an E30.

Ok, haven't updated this for a while but things have been progressing since February.

First off this happened

Image
Image
Image

This happened in about march, I left it on for a bit but it drove me mad so I took it off and just had a standard lip on it for a bit, not happy with that I got this.

Image

As you can see it was very grumpy, lots of rubbing down.

Image
Image
Image

This took ages, it looked like someone had prepared it with an angle grinder, eventually though I got there and it now looks like this.

Image
Image

The more eagle eyed of you will notice that it's far from perfect, it realy needed some filler in it but I stupidly hoped high build and plenty of flatting would suffice, I was wrong, like I say stupid really..

I also put the sideskirts back on, the OE perverts amongst us will cringe at me painting them but to be honest I don't care, I think they look great body coloured.

Here in Plastic primer.
Image

Brand new skirts too, surprisingly cheap from BMW, think the large section was only £42 or something, new clips etc, no tiger seal bodgery here.
Image
Image

Brake ducts painted too, they got missed when the car was painted, that would be my fault.
Image

I also replaced the manky front panel.
Image
Image

That all happened running up to July, more recentley I replaced the headlining with a retrimmed item, I did this myself but i'm not happy with it, I under estimated how hard this job is and got some wrinkles in it, I will be getting this done by a pro in the near future, I did get the sunroof lining trimmed by a pro and it looks excellent.

This happened last weekend.

Image
Image
Image

A huge thanks to Simon Alcorn, a very nice man indeed with some excellent stripes!!

This was preceeded by this though.

Image
Image

It's still not finished, basically I did what was needed to allow Simon to apply the stripes, once these are on it will be very difficult to machine polish. Eventually the whole car will have been flatted with 2500 and polished back, the work on the sides so far represents approx 20 hours!!! Haven't touched the roof or bonnet yet.

Yesterday I decided to turn my attention the broken (again) Alpina cow plough. I both love and hate this thing, it's made from horrid fibregash and cracks at the sight of a slightly larger than average speed bump, I might add that my car is rolling on the standard Alpina springs, no council drops or nasty coil overs for this turd, this gives you some idea of how low the valance is, it does however make the car...

Had to re build this bit totally, it's very fiddly, built up 3 layers of fibre glass matt and resin.

Image

One of the repaired cracks, essentially you put a saw blade through the crack to open it right up, next you feather the edges out, I used a little belt sander, on the inside of the spoiler build up your mat and resin, this provides and good strong stable repair, on the outside of the spoiler I laid some fibre glass tissue over the area I feathered out, this is to build the surface back up to the same level as the surrounding material, once sanded back a final skim of polyester is all that’s needed to get rid of any pin holes etc.

Image Image Image

Finally some high build primer

Image

And after guide coat and a rub down with 320, tomorrow i'll take it to work and shoot the colour, should look ok, as those of you who have one of these spoilers repairing them is a cyclical thing!!

Image

Oooh, got these too!!
Image
Very nice indeed.

So here she is as she stands right now, really happy with the look overall, can't wait to refit the plough.

Image

She's going to have a Longlife exhaust made and fitted on thursday, can't deny i'm really quite excited, the genuine system is great but it's not loud enough for this turd.

Simon Alcorn is going to fettle this bad boy for me.

Image

It's the Alpina (Janspeed) manifold, the flanges are totally missing and the ends are very grumpy, Simon is confident he can re-build them though.

I have a furniture clinic repair and re-coulouring kit on order to give my Leverzzz a new lease of life, then change the headlining again, wet vac the carpet, replace all the boot trim and carpet with stuff that isn't filthy and impregnated with dog hair, finally this winter the car is going up on axle stands, ALL of the suspension is coming off for powder coating/painting, the entire underside is going to recevie some fresh stone chip, jacking points welded up and a brand new rear panel as mine is a bit bent. Also got a new tailgate and rear windscreen on order. In other news I had a stange overheating issue which turned out to be a sticking thermostat, it did appear to be it's original one though so I can forgive that!!!

Thats it for now, more to follow!!!

those stripes look awesome...simon is a top bloke. the reason i don't do stripes is because his are so spot on :D

i'm glad you put the stripes this way around rather than the thick bit at the front configuration which i personally don't like

Thanks Dan, those Alpina skirts had to go. (sorry Si).
From memory the tailgate was about £400a˜¢. I can't find a decent used one though, they're all rotten, no choice really, it's on back order so god knows when it will rock up, same deal with the rear panel.
