Hello Im going to see a car that has sat parked up for 7 years.
Should I even attempt to start it?
Is there any simple things I can do to test it?
I will poke the shit out of it and get down and look under it and under the carpets etc...
Im learning from each disaster I bounce into.
I think Im getting it for cheap lol So I suppose either way I should take it and frag it if its a turd.
Asked the owner for some obvious faults all he mentioned was rust on the door. Pics to follow!

Personally I'd not bother starting it. £100 for a rot-free rolling iS shell is a steal. If the engine starts once you've squirted oil down the bores and cranked it with the plugs out... bonus!
If the thing is rotten, you didn't want it anyway!

Don't attempt to start it, without first removing the spark plugs and dropping a tea spoon full of oil through each plug hole, check that it turns over by hand with a spanner on the crank nose. Drain out the engine oil, ideally renew it, but at a minimum pour the original oil back in through the top as fast as you can in an attempt to fill the cam box. This will lube up the cam and chain, etc.
Finally, spin it over on the starter motor, with the plugs still out, until the oil light goes out.
Finally, put the plugs back in, give it some fresh fuel, and try to start it.

With no spite intended, your current technical expertise and tool range mean that it's going to cost you plenty to get this turd back on the road. If you're not paying someone else to do it, you'll be splashing out on tools to do everything that needs doing to get it through an MOT.318isPMK wrote:But im not spunking loads on it
Of course, tools are an investment that pay themselves off after a few uses, but only if you've got the time, place and inclination to use them. Are you sure you want to spend all that on a rotten iS just because you like the colour?

Ive made no decision to pump money into it as yet or to buy it yet. I'll go see it with a view that if 1000 invested gets me awhite 318is II'll spend on it and if not it'll be once more into the parts section
I dont have a garage or decent tools much free time or a clue what im looking at so I probably wouldnt attempt too much myself.

That'll frag well at least, assuming the owner is asking a scrap price.

I dont know if I can be arsed withbthe hassle of non payers getting fooking manky and spending my mobthly wage on bubble wrap.
And filling my parents garage with a soaking interior.
Im going to have a think about part value and cost of car and transporter and having it in the street.... its not looking likely

looks hanging
what you need to weigh up- is also the conditioon of the parts, and all the time cleaning it up to sell, whos going to buy a mouldy wet interior ? will need a good clean and dry out make sure no smell , all the external parts need a good clean, the engines probably foooked
but- the is front splitter will yeild back £70-80 alone, how much does the fella want ? you could probably still do well to just buy it, take the nicer parts, and spares for yourself off, seats, lights, grille, etc etc, is it on bbs ?

Buy it for £100, spend a day or two stripping off anything with value thats easily stored, weigh in the rest. You should get about £150 for it in scrap alone.

You can't park it in the street, must be off the road and SORNed if it isn't taxed!318isPMK wrote:Im going to have a think about part value and cost of car and transporter and having it in the street.... its not looking likely
Was reading last night on the MK1 Golf Owners Club website of a chap who'd had his car lifted from a garage where it was having work done because the DVLA camera car had spotted it and it was untaxed and not on SORN. The garage owner also had one of his own vehicles lifted and another customers cars, this all happened before 07:00 as well. Cost the owner over £400 to get the Mk1 back the next day.
Apparently the DVLA are now able to lift an untaxed & unSORNed car with no priory notice or warning. Was also a lot of people commenting that they've not had the reminders to reSORN their cars either! DVLA = C*NTS.
A lot of hassle to remove (especially if it's got a sunroof) as it's a glass out job and they don't actually fetch a lot of moneypolsta wrote:the black head lining will be worth taking !!!

You could always use it as a learning curve. Practice your spannering skills etc etc.
