My driver's side door lock is currently fine, but is noticeably worse than the passenger side. Is it possible to switch the barrels over between the two as the passenger side one is probably as good as new.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, because the lever arm that sticks out the back of the barrel will be pointing in the wrong direction.

When a lock rebuild kit costs only £20 or so,why bother?

But swapping them over does not work as the things are handed!TheDutch wrote:Because swapping them over is free.daimlerman wrote:When a lock rebuild kit costs only £20 or so,why bother?

That seems to be open to discussion, have you tried swapping just the barrels?daimlerman wrote:But swapping them over does not work as the things are handed!TheDutch wrote:Because swapping them over is free.daimlerman wrote:When a lock rebuild kit costs only £20 or so,why bother?
Alternatively, is the lock rebuild kit different for each side?

Looks like it could be viable:

The 'hole' in the door skin is keyed to the lock barrel,so not only will the barrel not fit,if it did fit then the lock lever would face the wrong way.
If you strip each lock you will almost certainly find damage like this;

Lock repair kits are not only handed,but specific to driver/pax door,so a LHD driver's door lock is different to a RHD pax door lock.This is due to the 'deadlock' arrangement.
Hunt up 'bigwinn' s recent thread,this shows exactly what is involved.

That settles it for me then. I look forward to when I have to do mine in a few years and find the rebuild kits are now £184+VAT.daimlerman wrote:Lock repair kits are not only handed,but specific to driver/pax door.
