e39 530d question

guys ive got a 530d sport last week it started making a noise from the engine so left it parked on the drive

its making a knocking noise on idle like an injector has gone...but when you drive, it sounds like a cammy noise like an old fiesta 1.1 lol

any ideas what it could be?
hopefully get it into a garage monday but im dreading the worst

Old BMW diesel = aggro. Should have saved yourself 25% and bought a 530i.

Pete you really do hate diesels don't you.

What ever it is it sounds expensive. Could be any number of things from the injector to turbo.

On the contrary, I love diesels BUT an E39 530 D auto is a pointless car unless you have a supply of cherry

The whole point of running a diesel is much cheapness per mile. An old E39 530 D does not deliver.

I can confirm this. The wife uses ours for the school run. 27mpg = Should have bought a petrol

I think it may be expensive now...decided to tackle the diagnosis myself until monad (couldn't wait curiosity got the better of me)
stripped the inlet mani down to find a missing butterfly flap....still cant think why it would sound like a cammy noise tho? unless the flap wasn't there in the first place meaning when the previous keeper had 'flaps done' the garage just bodged it together not replacing the flap that's missing?

is there a way of checking in the cylinders to see if the flaps gone in or caused any damage? boroscope?

im still guessing lifter cam or injector....it doesn't sound spanner enough to be a flap...sometimes it quietens down a little...

and agreed I should have bought a 530/540 and gas connverted it but Im in the middle of this so got no choice but to put it rite lol

This is a common fault on m57 and m47 engines.if the flap is missing then it has gone into one of the cylinders and the noise u r hearing is due to a bent valve or two.the compretsion gas is chuffing past the valve.it also makes a mess of the head and piston im sorry to say and is not a cheap repair.

I had the same noise on my 02 530d Sport

Chuffing/knocking/cam noise
Rough running at idle

Took inlet manifold off to do the swirl flap removal

1 swirl flap missing

1 dead engine a week later

You need to brake the 530d and then buy my 530d sport touring.

Low miles with loads of history
Gear box has been serviced
Crank Case breather Changed
Just Serviced

On a serious note I did a trip with the cruse control on after resetting the trip and averaged 40mpg.

I had a manual 530d before the auto and regularly got 50mpg on a run.

I've even looked at converting the touring to a manual but I cant be arsed with the hassle.

Alas the ebay ad will be written soon.

Is 40 all you get out of one of these?

I get 32 on a sensible run with cruise at a sensible speed out of my 530i. And I don't stink like the Exxon Valdez after filling it up.

That's the 25% off the sale price, not considering the incoming bill! Edit - I didn't realise the 3.0L's suffered as well as the 2.0l's. jesus BMW if the French had maintained they're quality of 15 years ago 205/405 they'd be ahead of ze germans, unfortunatly french cars are still worse than German.
