£5k ?
Looking at some of the scrap thats advertised around that level I'd say more like £7k upwards for a properly good one now thats :
Genuinely not rusty in ANY of the standard E30 places
Not been painted
Not been welded
Doesnt have more than 5 owners on the logbook
Hasnt been molested in ANY way
Is the right side of 100k
Has a proper history file showing genuine/OEM quality parts from new
You might get one for £5k that you could use and enjoy but I doubt you'll find one for that which genuinely needs NOTHING doing to it. As far as I can see prices are on the rise for quite average cars - The problem is finding one that ticks all the above boxes.

Only £1590 difference between the Sport and SE when new, and it isn't even a special edition model.
The first Tech 1 Sport I broke topped out at over £26k new with its extras.

The sport was a veritable bargain when you take into account the spec it had over the SE.Kedge wrote:Only £1590 difference between the Sport and SE when new

Indeed with hindsight it certainly appears that way, but of course it all depends what you needed from your car, back in the day if your were looking for an up market medium sized family car the SE 4 door would have been your choice re an E30, 2 doors just didn't suit most family orientated types.bss325i wrote:The sport was a veritable bargain when you take into account the spec it had over the SE.Kedge wrote:Only £1590 difference between the Sport and SE when new
I bet the male buyers would have preferred the Sport variant, but practicality would have to come first when families are involved, perhaps they made the choice at bit sweeter by speccing stuff like M tech kits and such like.
I'd love to be able to go back in time and visit a BMW dealership in 1989............

I'm not suggesting that buying one new would have been an investment, more what I was getting at, is if you were to buy a nice one now, and look after, it's not going to depreciate any further at this point, it's only going to rise in value.e30topless wrote:Correct,Chris_B86 wrote:Maybe the term I should have used is a non depreciative asset.

Obviously it's never going to see the heights of the M3 in terms of value, but for those that can't afford an M3, the Sport, in my opinion anyway, is the next best thing to a boyhood dream.
I paid £2400 for mine, and it's tidy, although not without fault and has seen a bodyshop, and been offered £4k for it recently

to compare the "new" prices is daft, every new car deprieciates, its like he says tho, a nice one now will only appriciate if looked after, no one really knows just how they will rise, never be m3 money, but with the m3 run away prices rocketing by the year, 1-12k m3s were still a lot but within reach of people, 20k prices are just a bit out of reach for most averagey types and that will make people look , once all the real sheds and fraggers have dissapeared and only the fittest survive, even 2 years ago the amount of e30s for sale was far more than it is now, nice 2 door of any type seem to be quite strong these days, and its not often you see "very nice" sports listed for sale, most for sale are turds that need a lot doing, a lot of e30s are being fragged and drifted or clinging on for life these days , in another 2 years time it will be a different picture
i love mine too jim- just got back from snows bmw eastern road ,i went armed with a massive list of part numbers, for every single clip, gromet, screw, bolt, fitting, for all external trim-re build and fit bumpers, all the bumper insert fittings etc, skirts, valances, all the front grill/front end fittings, door moulding fittings, all the rear panel fittings and screws for the lights, plate lights, all the arch lining fittings, engine under tray fittings, all the fittings for re building and attaching tech 1 rear spoiler and the foils, new bonnet foam, new side stripes , the lot !!!
and they had it all available still, the guys were like
you re building one or something ? and had a little chat with them about the car, they said it was nice to hear and a pleasure to help
£250 for the lot it was, not bad for the amount i got= around 200 bits at a guess, going to be a joy to re build everything with brand new fittings to last another 25 years
just great that bmw still provide that sort of service for things like little clips comming from the fatherland to go on the car

To be honest at the time, I'd been to view a couple priced around £3500, black and grey ones, and they were absolute nails, runs in all the paint, full of bog, rotten as a pear.jimbom30cab wrote:that's bizzare, i paid exactly the same for my tech 1.£2400 for mine, and it's tidy

I'd completely dismissed mine as I didn't want a silver one and it's got cloth and wasn't even going to view it.
At this point I'd all but decided to buy a touring stance it, but decided to have a look in the end, and I'm glad I did. It was a bargain in my eyes, the guy was really genuine, he'd literally bought it as a run around whilst his 993 Turbo was being built, but ended up spending a fortune maintaining it in his short ownership. It's even got 23 stamps in the service book
