hi all....
Merry xmas and a happy new year to all....

started to do a lot of motorway driving, recently when braking the wheel starts to shudder left to right very quickly - movement abt half an inch....

had the discs and pads changed abt 10 months ago - some budget brembo ones from gsf...and pads.... then the shuddering so i thought get the tracking and wheel alignment done - still no change..... ATS - fooking rip off...

do i have warped discs or a vibrator stuck in the steering column somewhere??? oh yeah - just recently passed MOT - so all joints and etc are all good....

pls any advice fellow zoners......

thanks

If you are confident that the control arm bushes are ok (a common reason for the vibration) check both calipers. A sticking caliper will cause the vibration and eventually warp the disc causing even more vibration!

If the pads have been on the car for 10 months, check for uneven wear on both pads on each caliper. This can give you a good indicator where the problem is.

You can get a caliper repair kit if thats the problem.

Euro car parts (and others) do reconditioned calipers - check their web site for exact prices. This is probably the best way to go if you need one.

Hope this helps.

hmmm.... i cant see any unusual wear and tear - the pads are the same thickness and the discs are flat, smooth and no cracks....

also i noticed that its started to do it occasionally also without braking now....doing my head in....

could it be control arm and the MOT place just couldnt be botthered to look properly?

It is worth getting a good garage to check the control arms as these are a common fault. Did the vibe start soon after the new brakes were fitted or have you done a load of miles since?

I have been chasing a similar problem on one of my cars - the only problem is that nearly everything has been changed on this car (discs, pads, control arms/bushes, hubs etc etc) and it has been checked and mot'd by a local BMW specialist. The only thing that was still original was the drivers side caliper so I have changed that today!

I will let you know if this sorts it as soon as it is back on the road.
