Devil foam on bonnet underside?
Moderator: martauto
This foam is driving me mad! Falling to pieces all over the engine and all over my clothes.
Going to rip it out, is it just for sound dampening?
Anyone suggest a replacement?
I'm running an 318i M10, so noise isn't really an issue.

i know it falls off in chunks but is't removing it completely supposed to be a pig of a job ?
Bonnet off job for best result and some sort of glue removal, i think reanult brake cleaner or something, may be very wrong there.
From my sport thread.
bss325i wrote:Another job i have tackled recently is the under bonnet foam which is a common E30 problem and can be very unsightly under the bonnet when its old and crumbly!
A top tip for this job!
I have heard of other people tackeling this and it being very messy and time consuming. Well i have found something that speeds things up and reduces the mess!
Toytas own brand brake cleaner! It is solvent based and after removing the bonet, pulling of the bigger chunks of foam you are lift with the glue still on the bonnet with a thin layer of foam.
The Toyota brake cleaner disolves the glue and foam and turns it into a mush that can be scraped of, near enough wiped off with plastic filler spreader and a rag.
Once the mush is removed a wipe down with the brake cleaner and the surface is ready to stick the new foams on. The brake cleaner does not damage the paint in any way either.
Much better!![]()
all i did- lay a blanket over the bay, a little plastic scraper took about 5 minutes to get 90% of it off (not scratching through the bottom later- some bits of that just pulled off by hand to bare metal) and only a bit of residue was leftjimbom30cab wrote:i know it falls off in chunks but is't removing it completely supposed to be a pig of a job ?
which you would remove with the stuff above, but i got the whole bonnet re painted both sides
new stuff about £40 i believe, on my list of bits to get

Barry, what's with the two washer nozzle valves in your pics? Isn't there only supposed to be one?
'89 325i Touring | Touring Resto Thread | In-Dash Screen install
Cars with head lamp wash wipe also have intensive wash so two pipes and there for two one way valve run to the bonnet washer jets. One from the main tank and one from the smaller intensive wash tank.Grrrmachine wrote:Barry, what's with the two washer nozzle valves in your pics? Isn't there only supposed to be one?
BMW also sell screen wash which is clear/blue in colour and intensive wash which is green and should be used neat.
I was thinking ofbuying some of this to do my bonnet.
Opinions?

is it this ?
04 Sound insulation set 1 51481925437 $73.63
on real oem, when clicking on a 325i , it doesnt list the deadening , but it comes up for 318is as that above ?

I hoovered mine off. Literally dusted all away. I still need to get some glue remover out to get the residue off and then i'll replace it with the stuff above. Did notice this on ebay also:

Wouldn't be hard to copy the shape, but my bonnet is profiled and that would be a pig to profile it perfectly. Might as well just get it from BMW if it's £45!

hate to sound like the sort of person who does a half arsed job but why bother getting all the old glue off if you gonna stick new foam on again?
surely the old glue wont cause a problem with the new foam sticking and once the new foam is in place no one will be any the wiser

but saying that, for same price you just aswell buy genuine bmw, but might even be exact same part from same supply ? post pics when it arrives
What car do you want it for?polsta wrote:There are 2 different sets there, up to and after 89, plus the one I posted above as on a 91 is , so that's 3 different part numbers
anyone any idea why or if all 3 are the same or different ?
Ben
a tech 1 1987 , as above if i go on that, it doesnt list any, but the 318is does but with a different part number to the 2 different ones on the cabby there, so its confusingBenHar wrote:What car do you want it for?polsta wrote:There are 2 different sets there, up to and after 89, plus the one I posted above as on a 91 is , so that's 3 different part numbers

It seems to me that you want the one that is "up to 89".polsta wrote:a tech 1 1987
But if you put your VIN into the parts pages it should give you the exact part number.
Ben
The 318iS one is covered in dimples whereas all the 6 cyl cars I've seen have smooth foam.
Just order the pre '89
