There are supposed to be gas struts fitted to either side of the roof mechanism, I assume these help manually lifting the roof or stop the roof crashing into the horseshoe compartment when lowering.
The part numbers are 1932751 or 1943752, not sure why there are 2 different versions.
My cab doesn't have them, do they really help that much, are they worth replacing?

My cabbie does not have them either!
Perhaps they were only fitted to roofs with power mech?

These would be for the electro-hydraulic hood, no?

No, my cab did have them but the rods were bent so I removed them, no pressure in them either, my cab had a manual roof from new.

Interesting. RealOEM does show them for my car (no.4 in the diagram)

My car doesn't have them though....but then I think my hood is not original (fabric certainly isn't) so they may well have been removed, also possible it never had them.
As daimlerman has said though, pics of them and where they fix into the car/hood would be good.

While I have the attention of you convertible paedo types. I have a very rare 'mint' rear window cover, see 21 in the link. £50 buys it.

I actually prefer solid roof cars, especially the E30, despite owning a cabriolet.pacerpete wrote:While I have the attention of you convertible paedo types.
Plus side I guess is I don't need to worry about roof drains or roof rot.

This isn't my car as it's tucked up the garage, but found this link, the strut is shown at the top of the pic above the start of the arrow.
They appear to fit in between the roof mounting.
I'll dig mine out out the garage when I get 5 mins.

You are correct.
Just been out into a cold garage and found mine, looks like they damp the folding movement of the main part of the hood as it is folded into the hood compartment.
I'm not going to remove them to see what difference it makes, though!
At a guess, you are right to suggest it slows the folding part of the operation and gives a bit of a boost when lifting the hood up.
