Now I've stripped and re-built the front doors on both of my E30's with no issues at all.The lock barrel and latch came out with ease on both occasions with little more than a bit of fiddling about.
But....
I've just had Stuart(bigwinn)call round with his late (11/90)M40 more door because he was having problems getting the lock barrel out.I'd told him how easy it was to do;
'Just poke a long screwdriver through the hole and pop the clip off' I told him.
But on his driver's door, non of the holes lined up to the lock barrel, the one that was close was obstructed by the plastic anti-theft cover over the latch.
I could almost reach the barrel clip with my finger tips from the window regulator hole, but there was no way I could pop the clip off.
I ended up taking the angle grinder to the inner skin and cutting a trangular hole to gain access.
Any-one else come up against this issue?

I felt bad about taking the angle grinder to it,but could see no way of being able to get the clip back,I would guess that on the assembly line the fit order was door latch, lock barrel, window regulator then glass.
Wonder when the door internal frame changed?

Malc, my cab seemed to have this arrangement also and it can be done but by the time I finally got everything back together my hands and patience was in tatters.

My door (before Mr Angle Grinder did his thing)

In the door guide, his door looks like (remember its a 2 door not 4 door)

Top piccie of Stu's door, the three holes that form a triangle is the area,I,in effect, just opened that bit up and enlarged the hole created at the top to the upper hole in the reccess.Be aware that the lower reccessed hole supports the guide for the internal handle operating rod!
Still going to be a bugger to get the clip back right, though.

My 1988 touring didn't have any big opening - I had to strip most of the window mechanism to get access to the lock clip.

Sounds council !
Two doors are obviously straight forward . Four door = window out. Unless you have REALLY skinny AIDS affected limbs or sadomasochistic tendencies AND are feeling lucky . Obviously if the turd is being fragged
the window can stay in and a long skinny flat blade screwdriver is usually sufficient to pop the horseshoe off. Refitting the horseshoe is why you take the window out

I'll see how I get on when the rebuild kit gets here tomorrow- at worst as I dont have skinny arms I can see the electric window motor coming out.
The home made access hole should do the trick perfectly though, although some bodge tape will be going on the edges to prevent me painting the interior of the door arterial red...

What's the problem with removing the window winder mech? It's just held in place by a few bolts.
Push a wedge between the outer rubber and the glass to stop the glass dropping down, undo the bolts and motor plug, wriggle the two ends of the mech. out of the glass and remove.

when I looked to do this, the window armature, which usually attaches using 2x 10mm bolts from memory, was bodged using sealant, very strong glue and other general crap.
