ok

so i bought an M20 a while back and currently rebuilding it but i can't remember which exact engine it is. The guy i bought it off said it was from an 86 or 88 sport i can't remember. Does this mean its pre or post facelift, i'm thinking pre because of the water pump set up.

My question really lies with the ecu, loom etc etc and which to get for it?? The cast number is 1 705 885 which apparently means its from 87 onwards but i have no idea

Help please!!

Cheers

Being a sport doesn't change anything on the engine.

The engine number is stamped at the bottom of the block on a flat area just above the sump. if it has 25K it's a facelift, 25E and it's a pre- and therefore high comp.

Either way, the latter Motronic 1.3 engine management can be fitted to it for better performance. All the parts you need are outlined here:

Have a look at the front pully on the engine. The vibration damper that has the crank timing marks on it, will either be smooth, pre-facelift, or be toothed with the crank sensor reading off it, post-facelift.

The casting ending in 885 is the head casting number and just denotes it being a 325i.

If you are rebuilding a pre-face engine now maybe a good time to upgrade it to the later motronic 1.3 managment.

Nice one cheers guys

i'm not in a position to check it all now but from what i remember the vib. damper is smooth and everything else points to it being pre-face.

I'll look at the ecu stuff, thanks for the link.

Also is there any resource/ pics on wiring the thing up? The engine was a bit of a state when i got it and the d*ckhead just cut the loom at the ecu so i left it with him

Cheers

Might be cheaper to buy a nice moronic 1.3 lump with everything on. B7 has a nice one for sale iirc and a very good price, just a thought

The wiki has everything you need. Read the page, click the blue links, and you'll find out what ECU you need, what a Motronic 1.3 loom looks like, where all the connectors go and what extra parts you need.

Sorry but i'm a bit confused by the link article

I have a smooth crank pulley on my engine so this is pre-facelift right? From what i remember it was running a crank sensor so to upgrade to a 1.3 will i just need an ecu or a rake of other stuff?

Anyone able to suggest what system it was originally running?

On the preface engine, the crank sensors are on the the gearbox bellhousing, and read off a small tab on the flywheel. If you have a smooth vibration damper the sensor has nothing to read off.

To upgrade to 1.3 you will need, loom inc crank sensor, ECU, injectors, front pulley.
