Hi I bought a 328i coupe auto the other day for £200 taxed and tested but a non runner, it has had the alusil block replacment so can rule out that its not down on compression like nikasil ones, head gasket fine no gunk in oil or water
The car will crank but no fire and fuel pump does not prime when ignition switched on, here's what I know myself so far...
Fused link in boot is good
No fuel or spark (tested plugs and coils)
No power to fuel pump (fuel pump works as I jumped it and it fired up)
I have voltage at the ecu and fuel pump relays (12v)
Relays click on turn of the key (fuel and dme/ecu)
Battery is good
I've done a scan with car soft the dme/ecu will not respond and nor will the auto gearbox ecu (egs) everything else does though
I remove the dme/ecu and as per many complaints on the net it was pretty soaked and corroded inside, so a new one is on the was along with new ews unit and chip.
My main question now is the auto gearbox warning cog light is illuminated on the dash, I can't read and codes as it does not respond, can this be because the main ecu is toast and it some how needs that one alive to read codes from the auto one? And will the car start with a dead egs ecu? As when I get my new engine one if it does not fire up just looking where next to go!
On a happier note the cars in great shape and realy original not modded or anything and will be a bargain if I can get it going I'd hate to send it scrappers!! It's one of the only e36s I've seen in a long time with rot free back arches!!
Thanks for any help guys I'm realy struggling if the new ecu don't work!
Not starting, Help needed with e36 328i complicated?

Have you checked the EGS unit for water damage as well?
If the EGS is fooked the you prob wont be able to read codes from it.

It seems pretty dry but tomorrow I will open it up and take a look, I think myself what's happened with the car is when it snowed its froze the drain ports up and drowned the ecu as its the lowest in the area but it was dry at he front but soaked at the back it was like white chalk inside that bugger, I cleaned it all up but it looked like there was a fair few dry solder joints etc and some light discolour on the board but no burned tracks that I could see,
If the egs is dead, if I get another one will it need coding to the car or was that just in other models? It's a 1996 model I have.

It wont make any major difference if they are not coded. Not sure about carsoft but it will plug in and work straight away so all is good.

Fixed!!! Starts and drives really well, only problems now is the blowers are not working its the digital one so I think it may be the resistor, it also tramlines a bit but its on 18" ac schnitzer reps and the tyres are not great so I'm sure when I change them it will drive great.

So was it the DME?
Did it need an EGS as well?

No egs was fine after plugging in new ecu+ews and key chip, the egs I found out, needs a working dme or it gets no power I think
