Is this box really as good as the stealer's say it is?
I've been into BMW today and the sales guy is telling me that the new box is more economical than the manual?
Can this be true?
How reliable are they to date?

Reliability they are pretty good so far but its early days. You'll have a warranty so its all good anyway.
Go and have a drive of one and see what you think. Smooth as you like and when the mood takes you, knock it into sport plus and use the steering wheel paddles.
The F10/11 is a really nice car to drive and inside the finish is lovely, miles ahead of its predecessor.

Auto is the default box for economy these days. Still don't know if i could live with an auto though?

I've supposedly got a 520i coming for test but GB are struggling to find one. It arrived last year with the twin scroll turbo N20 donk, 184bhp and 40mpg achievable. The F10/11 is due its LCI facelift this year, probably June or July. Only minor tweaks though.

I have to say, I'm just not into autos. I did look in 2011, but just realised I only like manuals.
Maybe, if I borrowed one for an extended demo I might find I'd like it.. but, I doubt it.

I was at Stratstone when the black 530d prototype turned up in a special events truck, wheeled in. (It didn't run ) and the special event crew built a wall around it in the showroom for the preview evening. Such a sense of relief that it looked so good. December 2009 iirc. They launched it and then said there'd be no 520d until March or April 2010!
Best one imo was the 528i manual six cyl, very rare car though.
Such a great car the F10, one of their best efforts.

I had a go for a weekend in a 8 speed automatic gearbox in a 62 Plate 118d .... Went like a rocket
Never knew a auto could be fun just pretty much kind of point and shoot if that makes sense
