Has anyone on here used a sump plug adapter to run a temp sender? Just wondered how reliable the sender would be in that position?

I would also like to know that, iv'e been told a more acurate reading would be obtained at "the core" somewhere around the oil filter housing area, but i have no experience/expertise in this area. Maybe some of the guys who run track cars could enlighten us!

I bought one and its snapped before I even tightened it up properly.
I welded a 1/8bsp nut to the sump.

I bought two Demon Tweaks adaptors.
i sent the first six back because they were the wrong thread(they supplied 1.25 packed as 1.5!)at the first oil change the adaptor fitted to the touring broke.
My next attempt, when I screw up enough courage, will be to drill and tap a stock sump plug....

Oil temp should be taken from the filter housing or main oil gallery on the block.
The sump is cooled by passing air and also has cooling fins on it.

There would be a significant difference in the temp between the main oil gallery and the sump then? I though it would be a lower temp in the sump, wasn't sure quite how much.bss325i wrote:Oil temp should be taken from the filter housing or main oil gallery on the block.

Think I'll just get an adapter and tee it off the oil pressure switch on the head, should be accurate then. Also the sump adapters don't sound like they are very good quality!

alpina fitted their temp sensor this spot as a sump plug for their VDO guage............

Didn't know that! My Peugeot Mi16 engines I used to run had a sensor in the sump from the factory, that's what made me think about it for my carSimon13 wrote:alpina fitted their temp sensor this spot as a sump plug for their VDO guage............

The Wiki has all the part numbers for fitting senders and gauges:
http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... VDO_gauges
Sump plug senders give inaccurate readings and are prone to snapping off (since they often protrude below the level of the sump).

I looked at the wiki a while back and got the senders in my ebay watch list ready to buy at pay day

M54 had an oil temp sender? Is it just for the ECU?

M20 doesn't have a oil filter housing like that to support a sensor. As i understand it the oil pressure sensor mounts here on the alpina VDO
I really can't see how the sensor in the sump will give wildly in accurate readings.

Correct the M20 doesnt have an oil filter housing as such, my post was to demonstrate that factory oil temp sensors are placed there or on the block. This is to give the most accurate reading.
The best place for it on an M20 would be to tee into where the pressure sender goes.
As i said, the sump is cooled by air passing underneath it and also has cooling fins on it.
Much newer engine such as the N55 have a combined oil temp and condition sensor in the sump but this is shielded from passing air by plastic under panelling.

The above pic showing the s54 has a blank next to the factory oil pressure sensor, this i can use for the oil but i still need to fit a pressure sensor for the external gauge kit too. (engine in e30). Not much room to fit a distribution block as the inlet plenum is very close and iv'e not seen an off the shelf block available for the s54. I need to know if the s54 factory ecu uses the oil pressure sensor data or is it just for an e46 instrument cluster to display to the driver? If the latter applies i could do away (link out the factory one) fit and use the aftermarket one for the e30 instrument cluster light/ doubled up with the external pressure gauge posibly? Same problem with the oil temp ( m3 cluster temp gauge and also the external gauge display has a readout for oil temp too. Any advice welcome!

It can be done, but measuring oil temperature in the sump isn't the best place to do so...Has anyone on here used a sump plug adapter to run a temp sender? Just wondered how reliable the sender would be in that position?
Exactly! The best place for it on an M20 would be to tee into where the pressure sender goes.
Best place to measure oil temperature is where the oil enters the engine at the main gallery - it's the most reliable place and robust temperature measurement you will get...
